Aya Storm, a physician on Chloe is ending work for the day, another long hospital shift tending to the casualties of the Rachk raid that occured just a few months ago . The alien raiders are dead now, exterminated by the combined might of the Void Wardens, and the UNW fleet, but the scars left on Chloe are real, and are evidenced in its people. Night by night, day by day, you try to heal them, by healing those who come to see you. The work is rewarding on a personal level, but Aya wants something more. Respect, authority, anything more than the routine she has now. The UNW recruits heavily from hospitals. Bioscopic healers are usually the first to be poached, what few there are, though skilled experts are often in high demand for the various special teams working on the polities goals. The recruiters, and the terminal they were given permission to set up in the hospital lobby are a constant fixture here, and it is always updating with employment opportunities.
10:34 AM
Several of them have just been added- ranging from helping with casualties from the Ghoul conflict just a short spike jump away, looking into serving an under-served settlement here on Chloe, or heading back Coreward, to assist UNW authorities on Gudrun with a project they've not included the details of- suffice to say they will need a skilled medical minded member of their team
Avatar
Aya enters the hospital to begin her shift. As she enters, she looks at the recruitment desk…as is her normal routine. Aya is torn. Not sure if it’s out of a sense of loyalty or due to her somewhat sheltered upbringing, she doesn’t want to leave. Aya feels comfortable with the known variables of her life. However, she desires more. Besides which, Aya is getting fed up with being the butt of the jokes and condescension from the others at work. Her thick skin has worn thin. While she feels for the injured who are innocent in this situation, if she won’t be shown any loyalty here, then she needn’t show them any in return. And with those thoughts, Aya has made her decision. She needs to move on and start a new chapter. Aya walks up to the recruitment desk, scans the postings, and then moves to speak with someone at the desk. “Excuse me please, I interested in one of the postings. Specifically, the one on Gudrun. There is not much information in the post, would you happen to have anymore details? I’m not sure if I would qualify or not.”
Avatar
"The science folks are tight lipped, but you'd be working with a large biomedical group. As you know, things we once enjoyed like lift, lazarus patches, and the like, are not things we can manufacture anymore. The medicines we've had to make do with instead are not very effective and in many cases are hardly better than nothing. We don't know their plans, though, more than they are attempting to refine what we have in place of Lift and Lazarus"
12:14 PM
(This close to the scream, nobody has the tech or resources to make nanomachines anymore, so aside from what you got at character creation,TL4 medicine doesnt exist anymore. We use the frontier meds from our own rulebook in #rules-and-books - there is an equipment guide)
Avatar
“Is there anything else you can tell me? How much does the job pay, is it a civilian or military position, what are the contractual obligations? … Also, if I were to take the position, how soon would I have to leave?”
Avatar
(I usually do credits based on the difficulty/length of the mission so i dont quote prices ahead of time, i dont want to lock myself in, but it would be a lot more than what a normal person would get as a salary)
2:33 PM
"It is a civilian position, and you'd need to go to Gudrun to meet with them to get more information about it. Travel is included"
Avatar
"And how soon would I have to leave?"
Avatar
"As soon as you are able. The need for help with the project is urgent|
Avatar
Aya tilts her head to the side, her eyes kind of roll upwards and to the side in a way that tells people she’s having an internal discussion. She really doesn’t want to leave her patients in the hands of some of these lesser doctors, but she’s so tired of the crushing atmosphere around here. Before she had finished thinking about it, the words kind of slipped out, “Ok, sign me up. What do I need to do?”
Avatar
"A shuttle is leaving from the starport here tonight, then. I will let them know to expect you. All you need to do is show up, and get aboard, and enjoy the trip to Gudrun. Once you're there, you'll land at Central, and there will be someone there waiting to bring you to the lab, and dsicuss the project further"
Avatar
“Sounds good”, Aya responds. She then turns and walks away. As she walks away, Aya starts to think about how to schedule the rest of her day. First, she’ll do one last round and check in on her patients. If that all goes well, she may run a few errands…however, the most important thing will be grabbing her stuff prior to heading to the starport. And with that, she heads off to finish her last rounds, making sure to get face time with each of her patients, and with her boss to let them know she’ll be moving on, before leaving work.
Avatar
(up to you on if you want to play any of that out)
Avatar
(naw, can fast forward through it. That's why I worded it like that..."If that all goes well"...you could key in on it if you wanted...otherwise we can skip it. I'll add a little something more to clarify it).
3:42 PM
As Aya goes about her day, she goes through her list and cleans up her commitments, to include saying goodbye to her parents who arent the most pleased with her decision. Assuming everything went well, Aya finds herself making her way through the starport to the shuttle with her equipment and backpack.
Avatar
The shuttle is landed, as promised, at the appointed time. The flight crew is two pilots, the navigator, and a crew chief, but it doesnt seem like there are any other people from Chloe traveling with you right now. The shuttle will pass through several worlds, before finally going to Gudrun. You're helped aboard and are given a cabin, as the crew begin pre-flight checks to leave
Avatar
Aya has a passing thought that she’s about to be abducted, but she’s more excited about the prospect of doing something completely crazy by taking a job on another planet. So, she sits back and enjoys the ride by passing time reading, listening to music and sleeping…awaiting her arrival at the final destination.
Avatar
(there is a list on the top of the roll20 for what can be done during downtime, and it is an 8 day trip between Chloe and Gudrun)
Avatar
(Aya will just study medical research and journals while listening to music...in hopes of further training her heal skill / medical knowledge).
4:41 PM
(disregard...can only train to level zero)...
4:42 PM
(she'll still just read medical journals and listen to music trying to keep herself calm and collected for this new journey).
Avatar
Arriving on Gudrun after eight days of space travel, you are brought to land in the city of Central. Central was the site of the original colony that brought humans to this world and is the beating heart of the UNW , though other worlds and other cities are now just as developed. A tan woman with red tattoos on her face and arm is waiting outside the chain link fence near the landing field. She is clearly a researcher given her dress and the sample case on her back. She remains standing there and observant and the craft sets down and the ramp eventually lowers, letting you out into the cool evening air of a new world.
Avatar
(Was Aya the only passenger in the shuttle?)
Avatar
(Yes)
Avatar
After 8 days of travelling as the only passenger on this shuttle, Aya had ample time to overthink things. She’s a little uneasy about having been the only person travelling. It must have cost a few credits to set this up. Two thoughts are foremost in her mind…either she made a mistake and is looking at indentured servitude for quite a while, or this job is more important than they let on. (edited)
9:56 PM
Aya spies the inconspicuous woman waiting outside the fence and jumps to the conclusion that it is the person who will escort her to the job site. (edited)
9:56 PM
Aya walks up to the woman and introduces herself, “Hi, I’m Aya. Are you my escort?”
Avatar
“I am. My name is Dr. Valeria Perez. It’s nice to meet you Aya. I work for the lab here in central and we were very happy someone decided to take us up on the offer. I told them the posting seemed too good to be true “
Avatar
“I don’t know if I would call it too good to be true. There weren’t many details, I was the only one on the shuttle, my head started to swim with all kinds of thoughts of paranoia. Regardless, I’m here and willing to give it a go. However, I still don’t know what the exact position is and if I’ll be a good fit. But please, lead on.” Aya smiles and waits for Dr. Perez to escort her.
Avatar
"As you know, we're looking in to trying to re-discover, if its even possible, how to re-create some of these older medicines from the past. It's been almost five years since The Scream, and I am worried if we don't try to preserve the knowledge somehow, even if we don't have the tools- that we won't have either in the future when living conditions improve. We've spent the better part of the last five years trying to comb every world we have come across for information about any of those medicines, but these sectors were all the frontier. We imported, we didn't make those kinds of finished products. Resources in, technical goods out. Its how these arrangements have worked since Humans were confined just to Earth. That said, we might have a lead on where we can go to start reclaiming some of this information -and like any team about to handle something dangerous- we need a good doctor"
Avatar
“Ok, you have both my interest and curiosity. I’m ready to get started. However, there doesn’t seem to be much of an onboarding or vetting process. If you’re just looking for a doctor to fill a team position, then that I can do. I just want you to be aware that I don’t have much field experience,” Aya says with a bit of apprehension on her face.
Avatar
“You think we sat on our hands for the nine days a flight from Chloe. We had time to bet on the way over, and field experience? You’re going to be getting that with us of course !”
Avatar
Aya lets out a short quick laugh, “Fair enough. Trial by fire it is. Shall we get going?” Aya smiles again and waits to be led.
Avatar
A groundcar is waiting for you, Valeria opens the door and lets you inside, before coming around to drive. "We're going to the lab first so I can grab a few things, and we can meet with the security team that will be keeping us safe. From there, we'll be departing for Asta, together, aboard my ship"
7:06 AM
"I understand this is a lot of travel for you, but Asta is still a dangerous world, and we could not risk you meeting us there without an escort"
Avatar
Aya sits in the car, her mind still racing. Sure, her life was comfortable, not to mention predictable, back on Chloe, but she had been growing more resentful by the day. While she hasn’t regretted leaving as quickly as she did, some things still nagged at her. Sure, the recruiters verified her credentials when she applied for the posting, but to accept someone sight unseen, no interview, running a background check while she was already enroute…things didn’t add up. Had she been too anxious to leave? Did she make a bad decision? Were they that desperate for a doctor? Just how dangerous was this going to be? Aya decided that she was possibly just being paranoid again and tried to relax. But she made note to keep her awareness up just in case. Until she encounters more “strangeness”, she’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and continue on. After all, reclaiming lost medical technology would be epic. To pass the time in the car, Aya thought she’d be a bit playful. Aya asked, “Dr. Perez, you said you vetted me while I was on my way here. What did you learn?”
Avatar
She gives you the pertinent points of your biography so far. It seems to indicate they’ve done some research without truly prying “So we think you’ll be the perfect fit for a team going to Asta, we could use a doctor and someone who can heal without needing bioscopic powers id even better , as we may experience psychic jamming at the site “
Avatar
“Well then, I guess it’s good to be normal,” Aya chuckles. Aya decides she won’t press the issue any further and looks out the window to take in the sights as they travel.
Avatar
The vehicle enters a garage door at the lab , a modern building though the ground floor was obviously once reclaimed parts of a starship. The vehicle enters and the door shuts behind it. The white hallways beyond are sterile and almost hospital like in appearance , and val begins leading you to her lab. Inside, four security looking persons and another lab associate are waiting , you look to be the last piece of the puzzle
Avatar
Aya, still a little paranoid, follows a few feet behind Dr. Perez. Her backpack securely fastened in-case she needs to maneuver a bit. With her guard up, she enters the lab trying to keep a few feet distance between her and the others. “Hi all, I’m Aya. It’s nice to meet you,” Aya flashes a smile while nodding her head, keeping her eyes on the others.
Avatar
A map of Asta is being displayed on the Lab's main screen, and everyone goes around, introducing themselves- all deferential to Dr. Perez, the leader of the expedition. Dr. Perez is a notable individual, responsible for her work in the war against the Underhill Collective, the virus that made the Helldiver worker caste revolt, and has been involved in many smaller scale UNW project after. She is every bit a hero in the scientific community, and is a powerful psychic.
7:48 AM
This expedition is going to be adventuring to Asta, exploring the ruins of an old First Wave of Exploration settlement there, and the hope is once the automated defenses and traps are navigated, some sort of data will be waiting at the end.
Avatar
(Would Aya know any of this about Dr. Perez? Or is it apart of her introduction? … I assume the rest is part of the briefing we receive)
Avatar
(its part of the introduction , but probably would have seen the name mentioned on various news stories before)
Avatar
Once the briefing feels as though it has come to a lull, Aya asks, “Dr. Perez, I have a question. Is all of the equipment pre-packed? It sounded as though we’d be departing right after this briefing. Or will I need to make a list of things I may need?”
Avatar
"The Free-Merchant we're taking will have an armory and locker aboard where you'll be able to get what you think you might need- within reason of course."
9:03 AM
(just make a list so i can let you know if something isnt available)
Avatar
“Understood, I’ll worry about it once I get aboard the ship,” Aya responds. Since this will be Aya’s first time in the field, she’s not really sure what else to ask. She just takes it all in…the surroundings, the people, the briefing. She figures she’ll sort it out as she goes. However, one thing is for sure, she makes note to stop being so paranoid with this new job and these people. It seems to be legit. Aya waits for the briefing to finish and to be directed towards what’s next.
Avatar
(did the briefing mention how long they expect this mission to take?)
Avatar
(It didn't because i dont know what to expect, and i think in character they'd feel the same)
10:25 AM
With no other questions, it seems to be time to depart once again. Valeria expresses some regret that you've come off one shuttle only to be packed into another one, but the voyage to Asta promises to be a much faster and more pleasant experience- especially now that you are traveling with an actual group of people.
10:25 AM
(4 days of downtime, depending on what you want to do)
Avatar
(do medkits also contain surgical supplies like a scalpel and clamps?...or is there a small surgical kit available in the books?)
Avatar
(Medkits have those things in them)
Avatar
(is healing powder like pharmaceuticals when it comes to encumbrance? meaning...you can carry a few before it starts to count against you?)
Avatar
(yes. just like how lift has 0 enc. Same idea)
Avatar
(well, my inexperience with the game will show through in Aya's noobness...so, we'll both grow together. hope i didn't overdue it with the list...i'm sure you'll tell me if i did <grin>).
2:02 PM
Since Aya has never been in the field, she has come up with two plans. If they go on foot with no additional support, she will search the ships inventory for the following (Mag Pistol / holster, 3 extra mags / 18 rounds, 2 extra cells for her energy pistol, 1 Survival kit and an Armored Under Suit. She will also pack the following into her backpack if available, 3 extra Lift, 5 Bezoar, 5 Anti-Tox, 5 Anti-Rad, 5 Radpak, 10 Healing powder, 1 extra Medkit and 2 Hydros). If there will be extra transportation support, she may take a few more items. But, she’s guessing that there will be some hiking involved and will need to be able to carry herself whatever she needs. Apart from getting the extra items packed, Aya thinks that she should learn some new skills to go along with her new life. Aya would like to see if she could learn how to fly. She would like to spend the 4 days seeing if the pilots would be kind enough to let her observe and / or possibly teach her a few things. When they are too busy, she’d like to download piloting instructions and start to read study them.
Avatar
(no TL4 medicine is available, so Bezor and lift are not available. If hydros are not on the frontier medicine list those are also not available)
Avatar
(i'll drop the bezor and lift ... but everything else is on the list).
Avatar
A grav explorer is being provided for the trip but cargo space is limited given the large size of the expedition. What you have requisitioned seems like it will have to last. (4/90 for pilot )
10:02 PM
Asta is a desert world where a vicious war between the human settlers and a robot race that lived here was once fought over dwindling supplies of water. The robots have since been defeated due to the intervention of brave UNW adventurers and a fleet of Imago Dei war bots who saw the threat to existing life here and intervened on the side of the humans. Now all that remains of the Host are the ruins of their former cities, and it is in one such place Dr. Perez hopes some sort of databank might have survived.
10:03 PM
Setting down 20km from the city , the ship releases the grav explorer and lands just long enough for all of you to get out
Avatar
Aya steps off the ship feeling invigorated. She spent 4 days studying pilotage which she hopes will give her more freedom and opportunities. However, now that she’s here, she changes to work mode. Aya felt good guessing correctly that there may be limited space and she’d have to carry whatever she needed with her on her person. Once off the ship, she takes a look around to get a general sense of the time of day and lay of the land / scenery while waiting to take her seat in the grav explorer.
7:41 AM
The ruins of Rho-Mu is your site of interest, a formerly human city, in turn occupied by the Alloy Host after the existing humans had been killed or driven out, and those robots were later destroyed by the imago Dei themselves. Three masters in the span of a short year. The site offers a mix of technology, and danger, from three different civilizations- a rare archaeological find, and an opportunity the UNW wants to seize before looters get the chance to. Looters, left behind drones, and other physical defense measures are things that the group will need to contend with. Asta is a dry world, it is currently morning and the explorer has been dropped in the mountains to the south of the city to overlook the site
Avatar
Aya sees if there’s any prep work she can help with, rather than standing around like a lump, waiting for the call to load up. Once she hears that call, she’ll take a seat and strap in for the drive.
Avatar
The explorer is prepared and you're asked to come aboard. Living space, a heavy machine gun for defense, a small lab, and a tool rack round out the space, allowing you and the team to live semi comfortably for the next several days. Valeria is in the cupola on the roof, behind the gun , though she has a pair of binoculars over her face rather than looking down the gunsights. "I think we can close to a kilometer or so before leaving this thing behind. It's loud, and we should make sure we're safe before bringing this thing in"
Avatar
(Not sure of the exact dimensions and/or interior layout of the vehicle…so, let me know if my actions need to be reworked a bit to fit…also, I’m assuming a grav vehicle’s ride will be relatively smooth). Aya spends a little time looking around at the interior, paying particular attention to the lab. When she hears Dr. Perez’s comment, she responds, “Dr. Perez, if we’re expecting possible looters and/or drones, is there a line of approach we can take that would mask our approach? Not to mention parking somewhere that would provide a bit of cover and/or observation point prior to moving in?”
Avatar
(think like a double wide RV) "We're going to be doing that once we get underway in a few moments here. We can't see mcuh this far out, but if you're anxious about it, stand as a lookout for me up here while I get us moving"
Avatar
“Sure,” Aya says and jumps up into Dr. Perez’s position after stowing her backpack. “Can I borrow your binoculars by chance?”. Regardless on whether or not Dr. Perez let’s Aya borrow the binoculars, Aya begins her lookout duties by going back and forth between a quick 360 scan and a longer steady stare in the direction of the route and ruined city…looking for any irregularities.
Avatar
(notice/wis, +2 for binocs)
Avatar
(ok, lemme figure out how to do it)
Avatar
(rolled 12. 5+5+2 ... not sure how to put it in here yet)
Avatar
As the grav vehicle crests the hill you're on, looking down at the city you can see a pack of looters, 500m away at the edge of the road, trying to cannibalize parts off a destroyed Alloy Host transport. The tank was hit by an air strike, cannon fire has chewed the hull apart, but evidently something of value to these people remains within. They dont seem to have noticed you yet, absorbed in their own business.
Avatar
Immediately Aya is filled with a sense of fear and dread. From the moment she accepted this job she really hasn’t had a chance to rest and soak it all in. This will literally be a trial by fire soon enough. However, she knows that if she let’s fear overcome her, she’ll fail. And Aya isn’t known for giving into fear and failure. Otherwise, she may have never become a doctor in the first place, or continued on through the constant denigration from her peers. Aya quickly speaks up through the comm system, “Contact, ahead, 500m. They appear to have not noticed us.” Aya isn’t sure what to do next. She doesn’t want to take her eyes off of the target, but she doesn’t know how to use the turret gun…so she wants to hop out. So, she decides to add, “I’m going to jump out of the turret so someone can get in here.”
Avatar
“We might not need to fight!” Val calls up to you. “There’s a speaker mic hook up there. Give them a warning. If they react poorly we will park and get the gun ready”
Avatar
Aya’s brain shuts down as she does a mental ‘Uuuhhhhhhh’… Aya thinks to herself, ‘what the hell am I supposed to say?’. After a few seconds, she regains her composure and picks up the mic. Aya pushes the mic’s button and says, “You are trespassing on a UNW site. Clear out now. This is your warning.” Aya hopes that will work.
Avatar
“Aya. Give them a warning shot. Just shoot into the air for a few seconds. Back up the words! Then we will deal with whatever’s down there”
8:46 PM
The security troopers are getting helmets and other small pieces of kit on to back you up and take your place if something actually needs to be hit
Avatar
Aya, quickly tries to work out how to operate the turret, carefully aims off to the side and a little above, and pulls the trigger to fire off a warning shot.
Avatar
Above, you see the looters are fleeing now, scattering into the rocks and scrub brush nearby, abandoning their work on the shot up vehicle. They've been taken by surprise, and aren't in a hurry to try their luck
Avatar
Aya breathes a sigh of relief and reports, “Looks like they’re scattering. Let’s hope they don’t regroup or come back with reinforcements.”
Avatar
"Good work!" Val calls up. One of the security team is ready to switch with you, and you;'re slowing as you approach the vehicle the looters had been working at. "May as well check it out"
Avatar
Aya steps down from the turret so that the security team member can get in there. Then she grabs her stuff and waits for the vehicle to stop and the security team to deploy.
Avatar
The ramp lowers, security out first, weapons raised and panning. Valeria grabs her own kit, and prepares to emerge with you, since gunfire did not greet the security
Avatar
Aya steps off the ramp, takes a look and listen around…then takes in the wreckage. However, since her expertise is medical, not mechanical, she figures she’ll let Dr. Perez take the lead…but she’s ready to head towards to ruined vehicle.
Avatar
They begin combing the area, and one of the soldiers calls out for a doctor, as he vanishes around the far side of the hulked vehicle
Avatar
Hearing the call, Aya runs to the far side of the vehicle…taking a moderate birth of space while doing so.
Avatar
A scavenger has been left behind. Most of his leg has been ruined below the knee. Burns cover his clothing, some sort of trap on the vehicle, or hazard around it seems to have been discovered and expended at his great cost
12:00 PM
He is alive, but will not be soon, and seems to have been disregarded by his fellows
Avatar
Aya see the patient and says, “Well, time to get to work”. She rushes over, sets her backpack down and pulls out a med kit. She then looks at the leg. If it’s bleeding, she’ll apply a tourniquet immediately. Then she’ll do a quick triage of his injuries and see what’s going on with him.
Avatar
It is bleeding, he has burns, and the bones and tissue around where the explosion was triggered have undergone serious trauma.
Avatar
(I’m assuming that I am a better doctor through my character than in real life, so I’m going to rely on her knowledge and stay kind of general with my descriptions of actions.) Aya will work as quickly as she can while being both efficient and careful. She’ll start with the highest priority injuries first. Aya hasn’t gleaned any information to the contrary, so she’ll start with the shredded leg that’s bleeding. In the interest of being fast, she’ll apply a tourniquet. She will then work to stabilize the patient in any other regard…treating for shock. Once she has him stabilized, she’ll use her bioscanner to do a more thorough scan of him. Then she’ll clean / disinfect the various wounds with what’s in the medkit, suture the leg (or amputate as the needed, and apply appropriate bandaging to everything. (Not sure how accurate I need to be with actions…or if I can just say, ‘Aya stabilizes and treats the patient…trying to save him’.)
Avatar
(The more detail you add the more likely it is you'll get a bonus or we avoid the check all together. The last thing you said would also be acceptable but its certainly not as compelling of a story)
Avatar
(got it...makes sense...although my medical knowledge is very limited...lol).
Avatar
(if its at least plausible, im good with it)
3:59 PM
There is a strong chance your quick action will be able to save the leg, but you will have to work fast. Val is a psychic, but not a bioscopic it seems- hence the need for a doctor

The leg can be saved. Medpaks are applied to keep him alive and pumped with medicine. You’re able to perform the surgery over the course of a couple hours while the technical side of the mission is ongoing - Val checking in when she’s not out investigating the wreck. The afternoon sun is high in the sky when it becomes apparent he will live and one day may walk again. He is sleeping now and automatic scrubbers begin cleaning and sanitizing the infirmary
Avatar
(From what you wrote it sounds like we brought him inside the vehicle where there’s an infirmary. So, I’ll start from there.) Aya breathes a sigh of relief. She takes inventory of what she expended and packs the rest away in her backpack. After she’s done cleaning and sanitizing, she checks on the patient one more time. Seeing that he’s still sleeping and stable, as well as knowing that he should be out for some time, she goes outside to ask one of the security team members to watch him for a few minutes. If she finds someone to stand watch, she’ll go outside to take a breath of fresh air and take a look around.
Avatar
(I’d say once stable we would have had to)
6:39 AM
The crew is working on pulling some kind of module from the vehicle. They’re cutting wires and snapping off fasteners , and the work seems to be about done. It’s not entirely clear what exactly it is though Val seems interested. “How’s the patient ?”
Avatar
Aya responds, “He’ll live. He’s stable and will keep his leg. Still sleeping.” Aya then pivots the conversation, “Find anything good?” Aya watches them as they work.
Avatar
"New type of engine. We're not sure how it compares to what we have now, but its a model the Alloy Host was using, and no ones had an up close look at their tech. The Imago Dei carried most of it back to space as campaign spoils with them , and departed with it.
7:24 AM
"We're lucky to find something like this"
Avatar
“Awesome,” Aya says, “then so far so good.” “Anything I can help with? Or are you about done?” Aya asks.
Avatar
She sighs. "when he wakes up, we'll need to talk to him. He's probably familiar with the area in a way we aren't. We'll be ready to set off again in a few moments - and those heroics of yours might mean we're better prepared for what's ahead. You've ensure an intelligence boon"
Avatar
Aya chuckles and says, “That all depends on how willing he is, I suppose. But, hopefully he’ll be very grateful for what we did and will be more than willing to help out. That said, I could technically wake him up whenever we needed, but best to let him rest a bit. At any rate, I’m all cleaned up and sanitized. Ready to move whenever.” Aya starts to turn around and slowly make her way back to check on the patient again…giving time to hear a response.
Avatar
Val doesn't have anything else to add, and there is a thump a few moments later as their prize is mag-locked into the storage bay bins in the bottom of the ATV. The large vehicle shakes slightly as everyone boards, and the vehicle begins moving off again. Closing to 200m of the city edge, the patient has still not woken up. The first ring of blackened buildings beyond the ruins of the city wall foundations can be seen ahead, along with wrecks of other fighting vehicles and some civilian ones who had been trying to escape when the attack occured.
Avatar
Aya keeps her eyes on the patient as they travel into the city. Although she knows the patient is stabilized and will live, she wants to do her due diligence and keep watch for as long as she can and hopefully be there when the patient wakes up…although she knows that could be some time from now if they let him wake up naturally. However, she is a bit tired after having cared for him all morning. So, she also takes the opportunity to sit down and rest some. Trying not to split her attention too much, she does look in a sort of wonder at the sites out the windows. They are traveling through history and it feels a little eerie doing so in a dead city. Aya has a passing thought for which she is pretty sure of the answer, but decides to ask anyways, “Do you want to scour more of these vehicles for possible tech?”.
Avatar
“The most important thing is getting into the city and trying to find anything that looks like an aid station or clinic. We are after medical knowledge , and we can come back for the scraps later especially now that we have some salvage already”
6:26 PM
The pilot smoothly sets down right against the burned foundations of the gatehouse where it can’t be seen from anything inside the city at street level
6:26 PM
“And to that I think we will be a bit more mobile on foot”

Aya was glad that Dr. Perez confirmed what she thought, and was hoping, was the answer. Good, we’re focusing on the mission, thought Aya, this dead city is already starting to creep me out…and we just got here. “What would you like to do with the patient? Wake him up? Handcuff him to the bed? Leave me or a guard with him?” Aya asks.
Avatar
One of the security troopers is going to bind him and ensure he’s sedated so you’ll get a few hours to look around. The true danger comes from what will be found in the city and medical support that far away means there was no reason to bring a doctor, any casualties will be dead before aid comes anyway. “Alright. Final weapons check everyone. Then we step off”
Avatar
The weapons are secured and with a thump the ramp lowers, letting everyone off into the desert sky.

Aya can’t help but think, Well no shit. But since you’re in charge, I needed to hear you say what you wanted done with him. Aya instead sighs and does an eye roll, out of sight of anyone looking, as she performs one final check on the patient. After that, she goes to check the status of the medkit she just used. (roll 2d6 to see if it’s still good?)

(I also did answer that question in the post after you asked it. )
10:44 PM
The kit seems fine for now. One of the security troopers is still going to remain with the patient no matter what faces are made either in front of Val or out of eyesight. A doctor is of more use with the actual scouting team.
Avatar
(Yea, I know Dr. Perez is ready to go. I’m going with…just wanted to check the supplies. I saw your response in the help channel and thanked you…and felt appropriately dumb for not looking it up myself. Also missed the ‘per day’ thing…I was focused in on the ‘per patient’. Now that it’s straight in my head, I’ll continue and move forward.) Seeing that she still has plenty of supplies, Aya finishes her checks and grabs her equipment / bag. She signals to everyone that she is ready to go and moves with the group to step out of the vehicle.

As Aya steps off the ramp, she brings up the projection of the archived map in order to get her bearings. She notes that they seem to be parked in the southwestern parking area…right around the northeast area of it. Aya sees several buildings, fairly close to each other, that they can search, one right after another, in and easy to follow pattern. However, there are two buildings, which seem important, that lie on opposite ends of this map. Aya decides that she’ll call out that decision point when they reach it. Until then, Aya thinks they should check out the closest building, Bldg 146. Perhaps that children’s lab will have some medical tech. If not, they can move to the library and see if there’s a computer / data bank that survived. “Dr. Perez, from the map, there are several good buildings to check out, I recommend starting with this one. It’s a medical lab looks small and quick to check,” Aya says as she points to Bldg 146. “If there’s nothing there, we can move to the library. There may be a bank of info there that possibly survived,” Aya continued.

The security forces call a hold 25m from the building as a shrill alarm begins to sound. A drone lifts off from the roof, it’s quad motors straining and it’s form battered. None the less you can see it is carrying two grenades on stubby after market mounts , and it’s heading for the group

(well, let’s try this…calling out and pulling out a “readied” weapon are on turn actions? Then I can do 1 attack and 1 move…or hold. Something like that.) As the alarm sounds, Aya looks around to see the drone lifting off from the roof. Aya calls out, “Drone, forward and above, with grenades,” as she pulls out her laser pistol. Aya quickly moves away from anyone else, preferably away from the building as well, by about 10m and then tries to take a shot at the drone. (was that an ok combat turn? I’m still reading, got caught up with some stuff today.)
Avatar
(If it’s readied already it does not cost any actions )

(And yes that’s great. Just need to know the results of the shot)
Avatar
(i dont know if i did it right... i clicked on laser pistol, added no mod... it said attack 4 and damage 3)
Avatar
(you did it right) The shot misses. The security personnel have a bit better luck, each of them striking it (16/3, 16/7) , and their solid shots send the drone crumpling into a heap of falling scrap metal. With a flick of telekinesis, Val sends the disabled drone cartwheeling off to a safe distance, as the grenades it was carrying explode.

"Good eyes. That could have been bad"

(does the alarm die along with the drone?)
Avatar
The alarm seems to have been part of the drone, and it is quiet now, since the drone is now in hundreds of small pieces

Aya curses herself under her breath and vows to get more target practice in, then snaps back to the moment. “Well, guessing if anyone is around, they probably know someone is here. Just hopefully not our exact position. We could break off and go in a different direction, or just continue into the building where we could start our search and have some cover if anyone comes investigating,” Aya says. “I say we continue into the building and see what happens. Maybe we get lucky here and find something…and at the same time, if someone comes looking, our vehicle is right over there,” Aya nods in the direction of the grav vehicle.
Avatar
"I'm glad we kept someone aboard. Maybe one of you go back and man the gun, just in case" Val says, and one of the security troopers jogs off, leaving two soldiers, Val, and you, to stack up on the door and prepare to enter
Avatar
Aya moves to stack up behind the security troopers, keeping her laser pistol drawn.
Avatar
There is a boom as the lead trooper knocks the door open, and with weapons raised, they move into the antechamber of the building. It is painted with bright colors, flaking now, and partially burned from the heat of the destroyed city outside. Secure doors lead further in, past the reception desk to where the children would have been gathered for instruction, and play. there is a broken terminal on the U shaped reception desk.
Avatar
(Seen…will post when get back home)
Avatar
Seeing that the reception area is clear, she moves to the reception desk to search for ID cards, relevant notes (about codes, inventory, etc), anything that may still be working (compad, data stick?), button (or other release mechanism for the doors…and looking to see if there’s a map (on the desk or wall). While she does this, she suggests that the security team overwatch the secure doors…and try them to see if they’re open

The security team is working with a keypad attached to the doors. Val has her compad plugged into it and looks to be trying to get a combination figured out

The computer can be switched on. Otherwise, it seems they practiced the clean desk policy here pretty well, and there isnt' anything left to be swiped. THere is however, a button that unlocks the doors under the desk
Avatar
“Found a button to unlock the doors. The computer still looks operational also. Let me know when you’re ready and I’ll hit the button. Until then, going to check the computer real quick,” Aya tells the others. Aya flips the switch on the computer.
Avatar
There is a bump in the wall, as the locks disengage "Good find, doc" Val quips, snapping the cover of her compad back into position, and drawing her handgun again
Avatar
Aya must have accidentally hit the switch for the door when she leaned over to flip the switch on the computer. “Sorry for unlocking them before you were ready,” Aya apologies while waiting for the computer to boot up. Once the computer boots up, Aya sees if she can get into the system and glean any information from it. (Generally looking for any useful data, room codes, inventories…anything that might be useful).
Avatar
You can see Val and the security folks laughing at what they think is a joke. "You're going to fit in just fine" one of them says through an atmofilter. One of them takes in a breath, about to say something else. The computer moves from its blue log in screen to standby, and outside you can hear the percussive thump of the main gun on the explorer shooting at something
Avatar
(are there windows in this room?)
Avatar
(Not in this room no)
Avatar
Hearing heavy weapons fire outside, Aya calls out to Dr. Perez, “Dr. Perez, sounds like our vehicle is firing at something. What would you like to do? I think we should have the troopers take a quick look if you want to watch the hallway we just opened up.” Aya isn’t sure this is the best course of action since she isn’t trained in this kind of stuff, but she knows they need to know what they’re dealing with outside before running out…and she’s also aware that they just opened up their backs.
Avatar
“Alright doc. You and me will move into the next room. We will let the soldiers do their jobs. Get out there” One of them raises his weapon as the other opens the door, and they move back into the desert sunlight
9:38 PM
You’re not able to get a glimpse of what’s drawing fire from@your group

Before moving away from the desk, Aya looks at the computer to see if it would be worthwhile investigating it any further.

It seems to be working and worth rifling through
8:18 AM
(You can essentially ask it questions and I’ll answer them rather than just dumping you enormous blocks of random stuff)
Avatar
Seeing the computer up and running, Aya isn’t sure what to ask. She’s not much of a detective. So, she decides on the simplest questions. First things first, she thinks. “Computer, are there any locked areas and can you unlock them.”
Avatar
There are two more locked doors at the back of the next room (the one we unlocked but haven’t been inside)
12:01 PM
One is the infirmary and the other leads outside to the play yard
Avatar
(was the computer able to unlock them? or did i get an error and have to do it manually?)
Avatar
(It’s not connected to those doors)
Avatar
(sorry, i think i'm over-thinking this one and am vapor locking on what to ask....hold on a min).
Avatar
“Computer, where would medical technology data be kept?” Aya asks.
Avatar
The infirmary has all the on hand medicines and medical machinery , if any is still operable
Avatar
Damn computer, that’s not what I asked, Aya thinks to herself as she grows increasing annoyed at it. Ah nuts to this, we need to get moving. No telling what’s outside and if our security team will be able to hold out for very long, Aya concludes. She then moves from the reception desk area over to Dr. Perez. “Ok, let’s get going. The computer didn’t give me much information, just that there may be something worthwhile in the infirmary. We should get moving while the security team buys us time,” Aya says to Dr. Perez, indicating that she’s ready to go through the doors.
Avatar
(Yeah it can only answer as far as what’s within its network, which is this building )
Avatar
(I figured...dont know why I was having such a hard time with it...my mind was just blank overthinking a few things.)
Avatar
The doors lead into the combination playroom/classroom. The faded rubber floor tiles are somewhat warped and most of the toys have been scattered by the panic to flee the city. You can see the faucet in this room has one of the rationing systems attached to it as most water is on Asta. Two doors at the back of the room lead to the infirmary and out into the yard , respectively
Avatar
Aya does a quick scan of the room while moving through it to the other set of doors.
Avatar
Nothing else stands out to you. There’s a camera that the front desk probably used to keep an eye on things back here but it’s disabled now (edited)
Avatar
“Must be a play area for the kids,” Aya comments as she moves to the next set of doors, laser pistol drawn. “Are you ready for the next area?” Aya asks Dr. Perez.
Avatar
"I'll open it, and you cover, sound good doc?" she asks, getting ready to plug in her compad.
Avatar
Aya positions herself to cover Dr. Perez. “Ready!” Aya tells Dr. Perez…and waits for her to open the door.
Avatar
The unlocking cycle runs for several seconds before the lock clicks off- Val punches the lever down and enters the dark infirmary, gun up
6:56 PM
You likewise stack in behind her. Nothing jumps out to shoot or stab at you, but the room is dark.

(When I said “sweep of the room”, I meant looking for any “lifeforms”. Can I assume then that the room was empty…of lifeforms? I’ll keep working on being clearer, my fault. Since I haven’t rp’ed for a while, I’m having a small issue of … keeping in mind that she’s not military. So, I’m trying not to use that verbiage…but it’s difficult since I’ve been military and military contractor for 3 decades. But military terms can be more succinct to what I’m trying to do…lol. The thought has crossed my mind that I should have just made a military character. haha) As Aya looks around the room, a small glint catches her eyes. Aya cautiously moves over to where she saw it, all the while keeping her ears and eyes open for anything lurking in the darkness. Once she arrives, she sees it’s a small box. The words on the side read “Naval Issue”. This name sounds vaguely familiar, Aya thought to herself. “Dr. Perez, I think I may have something here,” Aya says. “It’s labeled ‘Naval Issue’. I’ll grab it,” Aya continues as she takes it and secures it in one of her pockets. Aya then moves to look at the imaging machine. Well, I’m no tech, but let’s see if this thing has anything of value left in it. … “Dr. Perez, there’s an imaging machine here. Any value to you?” Aya asks. (edited)

"Looks like it was a diagnostic scanner. The stuff we have on Gudrun is better, but the people here might need it. We should try to wheel this thing out if we can."
Avatar
Aya takes a mental pause and thinks to herself, Eehhhh, wheel it out while we’re being shot at? I don’t agree with that at all. Why? Aya then comes up with a possible reason for her statement. Well, maybe she’s trying to win hearts and minds. From one perspective, those initial people outside were looters. But, from another, I guess they could have just been trying to survive. Aya sighs and then pops back to life and says, “Ok, let’s do this.” She then proceeds to see if it can be moved.
Avatar
It can be moved. It is on wheels. To her credit val doesn’t seem like she’s planning to charge outside with it, and as you both get it to the main doors of the building she peeks out. Several looters are dead and the rest seem to have broken off. One of the marines is hurt , resting against the side of the explorer clutching his leg
Avatar
(going to try to normalize how I bold, italicize, etc my thoughts vs actions vs etc. … been kind of all over the place figuring out how I want to do it…anyways…ah, who am I kidding. I’ll probably be back and forth on it for a while.) As they approach the original doors they used to enter the building, Aya is relieved to see Dr. Perez stop and peer out. Well, at least she’s not just going to run out there with a present for the attackers, thought Aya. As she finished her thought with a little smile on her face, her attention was captured by what appeared to be one of their marines on the ground clutching one of his legs. “Dr. Perez, we have wounded, do you see anything else of immediate concern?” Aya asks the Doctor as she prepares to exit the building and run over to the injured marine.

Well, suppose I should hand this over and hopefully see what it is, Aya thinks to herself as she pulls the small box out of her pocket. Aya walks over to Dr. Perez and says, “Here you go, Dr. Perez, one small Naval Issue box.” Aya holds the box out in her hand for Dr. Perez to take.

“You’re right. Time to crack this thing open and see what we have. “ There is a small rasp she extends from her meta tool and she begins working on the lock. In that time your compad rings , and the UNW joint shipbuilding program has a deal on a free merchant and emergency shuttle, on offer for those willing to undertake more dangerous polity work

While waiting for Dr. Perez to open the box, Aya turns her attention to her compad. Hmmm, who’s trying to contact me? Spam? Wonder why I’m getting this message… No matter, this job here seems to be a one-off. Was hoping it’d be a little more permanent. So, guess this ad is rather convenient since I don’t know where my next paycheck is coming from…and nuts to going back to the hospital back home. Absolution A more powerful medical version of the over-the-counter purge stims favored in the latter days of the Tenebrian Empire an Absolution stim does a violently complete reset of the user’s physical system, purg- ing them of any stim effects, radiation damage, hostile nanites, and almost all toxins or diseases not programmed for bioweapon-grade virulence. Even Black Dust and other weaponized nanite damage is negated for 1d4 rounds by the dissipating effects of the stim. An Absolution stim inflicts 2 points of System Strain on the user, but if their system can’t handle that alteration it still takes effect, but inflicts 1d4 damage for each point of Strain it can’t apply. ------------- Tranquility A popular state-sponsored recreational drug during the latter years of the Terran Mandate and the Tenebrian Empire that replaced them, Tranquility artificially calms and sweetens a user’s thoughts and temperament, infusing everything with a subtle glow of rightness or philosophical acceptance. A dose of Tranquility can suppress most ordinary dreads or low-level psychological distress, and grants a +2 bonus for Mental Effect saving throws against effects that induce strong emotions. A dose of Tranquility lasts for four hours, though automatic anti-abuse components allow it to affect a user only once every 24 hours.

“Looks like you may have gotten something good out of this expedition,” Aya remarks to Dr. Perez. “Are you happy with the outcome?” Aya asks the doctor.

“That is certainly kind of you to share one with me. I wasn’t expecting that. Once the contents of the box are revealed, something clicks in Aya’s mind. It’s as though the conclusion to this mission has been met and she starts to feel her exhaustion. Whew, I need to lie down soon. I’m getting pretty tired, she thinks to herself, ready to go to her cabin and lie down once the doctor answers.

(10/90 pilot) The return to Gudrun is quiet. Val keeps to herself in her lab, trying to document as much as she can about your discovery in its natural state before she is back at her proper lab to do all sorts of science on it. Entering into realspace again you can see that your request for the ships has been granted. The United Nations of Worlds government has come to understand your mission was a success, and are willing to put their coffers where their mouths are, to see if you're capable of something else. This mission will be something a bit different, and more relevant to your immediate skills. There is a sickness spreading on Thojhild. The world was once a planet of man-eaters, the humans there falling into primitive living and tribalism rapidly in the years following The Scream- though it is rumored they were well on their way beforehand. A multi national uplifting effort is present on the planet- but with the influx of off world guests , the incidence of disease they are carrying is much higher. The population in the developing capital city there is especially hard hit, and the arrival of a medical team to handle the worst of it would ensure the UNW is able to save some face there.
Avatar
Well, out of the frying pan and into the fire. Easier to be second in command than first…but I did want this. Hope I don’t fall flat on my face. This last mission I was along for the ride, but this next one could make or break me. Aya thinks as she begins to get all of her stuff together in preparation of docking and disembarking. First, though, I need to figure out where I need to go once I land. Aya looks at the message again to see if there was any info about a meeting or briefing location.

And that is where val is also headed to dock. It looks like your paths diverge here for now
Avatar
Well, that’s convenient. At least I won’t have to carry my stuff all over the station. Aya thinks as she see’s her arrival and departure location will be the same. A few hours later they arrive at the station and dock. Aya grabs her stuff and moves over to Dr. Perez to say goodbye. “Dr. Perez, it was a pleasure meeting you. Thank you for the opportunity,” Aya tells the doctor. She then waves, turns, and departs for Trivedi Cloud Orbital’s platform.

The docks are on the planet facing side of the station for small craft like yours and now that you’ve arrived back in the system, there is a briefing video waiting for you aboard. A small crew also comes with the vessel to assist with the piloting, mechanical duties and electronic systems. You are the vessels owner and therefore it’s captain along with the rescue shuttle it comes with

Wow, I know I want to prove myself, but I don’t know if I’m ready for this. I thought the mission with Dr. Perez was a trial be fire…this is going to be, well, I don’t know what it’s going to be. Let’s just hope it’s not my first and last chance. They always say, be careful what you wish for… Aya’s thought trails off as she steps up to the ship, looking for a crew member to lead her into the ship and to her briefing video. (edited)

Ok, let’s get going. I’ll figure it out on the way. Aya introduces herself to the crew and gives the order to finish preparing the ship. “Once preparations are complete, depart the station and set course for Thjodhild. Let’s get there quickly. We’ll be helping with the medical situation on the ground,” Aya tells the crew. She then goes to put her stuff away.
Avatar
You can feel the ship, with its docked shuttle, gently rocking as it slides out into open space. Setting your stuff in the bunk you see the orderlies and non-essential personnel have gathered in the main galley. Small talk and cards are ongoing, as it will be six hours before the vessel makes it to the system jump point.
Avatar
(I was thinking of doing an inventory check...but I suppose that's getting into the weeds too much. Just assume we have what we need for now? and don't sweat the small stuff?)
10:45 AM
Aya spends some time walking around the ship…getting to know both it and the crew. She also takes a quick look at the supplies, both medical and general, and takes a look at the medical facilities to make sure everything is in order.
Avatar
(The ship lockers and armory are considered as having the gear you would need. You would have to buy the fittings again fi you hand out a lot, like giving the armory contents to a small village or something for example. Thojhild also has a ship service depot there, and you're in UNW territory for the entire trip, so you're not at risk of not having fuel or supplies)
Avatar
Once familiar with the layout of the ship, and having spent some time getting to know the crew, Aya tries to get a few news reports about the situation on Thjodhild. (just trying to see if there’s any additional information I can glean regarding what’s going on…either situation wise, medical wise, politics wise, security wise…etc. also, I know I’m getting into something I don’t need to focus on yet…but is there a layout of the ship? Or is there a way I can make one myself? Just curious.)
Avatar
(I didnt have a layout. Most of the time it has not mattered since we know what the ship's fittings are. I have not researched making layouts because for my purposes in this game it is unnecessary, so I'm not sure where to point you as a consequence. I laid out what is known, someone from the UNW getting more information and handling the problem is like, the entire central tension of the mission I am sending you on: There is a sickness spreading on Thojhild. The population in the developing capital city there is especially hard hit, and the arrival of a medical team to handle the worst of it would ensure the UNW is able to save some face there. ) (edited)
3:07 PM
(there are Prometheus projects already happening there to re-uplift the people, so there would be a security element for those individuals as well)
Avatar
(Ok, so, we’ve determined that apparently, I’m a bit slow on the uptake. Gotcha) Seeing that everything is in order, Aya stands back and watches the crew work. Learning the synergy of the crew members and their positions…as they make their way to Thjodhild.
Avatar
(10 days of downtime, and if you wanted to stop anywhere, do anything on the way we can, otherwise we'll get there)
Avatar
(Well, everything I thought I wanted to do was shot down…heh. I’m also left with the impression that time is a factor and I need to get there soon. So, between that and the fact that I’m still learning things, I have no ideas or agendas. Therefore, I don’t mind if we just get there. Aya can continue her pilot learning watching and interacting with the crew.)
8:38 PM
The world of Thjohild and the information about it begins scrolling across your ship's display, as you emerge into the system. The capital city is south of a large mountain range on the western continent. It does not have a name, but it is the place from which the aid and uplifting effort is being conducted.
Avatar
As they approach Thjodhild, Aya speaks to the bridge crew, “Put the ship into a geosynchronous orbit above the capital city and contact them. Once we have permission to land, a small contingent will stay on-board. The others will come with me in the shuttle. Once on the ground, we’ll figure out how best to help them.” (Ok, I apologize in advance if this is another dumb question, or rather not important at this time question, but what is my exact crew makeup? Or, can I just nebulously / ambiguously say the “medical team” and that’s good enough?...I know I’m making this tougher than it needs to be…lol).
Avatar
(Generally speaking your crew doesn't do "mission" actions unless you have a focus like Henchkeeper. FM crews are also pretty small, yours is bigger than most at 18 possible with your extended life support, but unless Neko's told you otherwise your not rolling with a battalion or anything like that.)
7:42 PM
(Also, I saw this because I read most the UNW threads, but if you have more questions about ship stuff all the mods check #help!)
Avatar
(Def some cart in front of the horse here. Outside of henchkeeper the NPCs don't really do mission things but they're background fixtures like other doctors, researchers, ect)
7:09 AM
(they wouldnt send one person to handle an outbreak, but you as a player are going to be the one in the spotlight)
Avatar
The orbital station here allows you to land in the heart of the capital where the multi organization uplift project - and the source of the infection- is located. They’re happy to see a medical team responding so quickly
Avatar
Aya directs the shuttle pilot to land near whatever appears to look like the center of the medical activity.
Avatar
The center of the capital is a large cleared square big enough to accommodate your ambulance shuttle. Your merchant vessel will remain under the protection of the small fleet here keeping watch over the situation on the planet below. Following the assigned course down, you land in the middle of a large multi organization sea of tents. Colors are everywhere representing the different agencies here, and more than anything you can smell the pyres where those who have succumbed so the mystery illness are being as hygienically disposed of as possible
Avatar
After the shuttle touches down, Aya grabs her stuff and disembarks…looking to see if there’s someone to meet her.
Avatar
There is a man in UNW civilian garb , though with enough followers to mark him out as important, calmly waiting for the ramp to lower. He seems relieved to see an actual medical team is here
Avatar
Aya steps off the ramp as soon as it hits the ground. She sees the plumes of smoke rising from fires in the distance and notices the smell in the air. Well, it’s not the most hygienic way to dispose the corpses, but I guess it’s better than nothing. Breathing this stuff in though, not the best… As she steps off the ramp, the gentleman and his entourage catches her attention. Suppose he’s waiting for me. Aya turns to face and greet him, “Hello, I’m Aya. I heard you needed some assistance. Where should I start?” (Edit: I didn't copy / paste correctly and the last two words got cut off). (edited)
Avatar
"We need medical assistance" he agrees. "Its up to you where you want to set up, but I'd recommend doing so in the town square here so we can make sure you get included in supply distributions when they come in. You're sort of going to be informing us about what you tihnk you might need to get the situation under control. The locals tend to keep to the north of the square in some of the ruined buildings and side streets. You m ight want to take a trip out in that direction to try to get some eyes on them yourselves,a nd some samples.
Avatar
“Do you have any preliminary data I could look at, or are we still at square one?” Aya asks.
Avatar
:"Nothing I'd trust to make an action plan. Lots of word of mouth from the locals. I think you need to trust the evidence of your eyes"
Avatar
“Ok, I’ll see what I can do,” Aya responds and then turns to find a spot to setup in and/or around the town square. (Intent with the above is for her to find a place to make her HQ of sorts…in the area where the person recommended).
Avatar
The northern side of the square is less built up by the multi organization set up here. You can see the locals keeping yo the edge of it, eager to see what is happening but mistrustful of the circumstances. None of them are armed. They look dirty and undernourished , as well as sick
Avatar
This looks like a great spot. In the town square, but near the northern area where the locals are. Rather convenient actually. Guess I’ll set up here. Aya thought as she proceeded to setup her area. Once the area is setup, Aya walks over to the locals to the north who are watching.
Avatar
Your medical team begins getting their tents and the portable clinic set up. There are five exam rooms, and a small lab that will be set up within a few hours. The locals shrink back as you approach- not outright flight, but wariness
Avatar
Aya approaches slowly trying not to spook them. She stops a little ways out…far enough not to have to yell, and says, “My name is Aya. I’m a doctor. My team and I are here to help with the sickness. Do you have a leader I can talk to please?” Aya then waits for a response, not going any closer.
Avatar
A woman in dirty shaman robes reaches the front of the assembling group. She has a necklace of human finger bones but has a bit of an air of her where she is out of place and time. She is home on this world, but not of it. “I’m Catherine Frazier. I am the voice of the people’s here and a shaman of this planet. I am what you would classify as a psychic. “
Avatar
“Catherine, it is very nice to meet you. My name is Aya. I am a doctor from Chloe. I am here to help see if we can get a handle on this sickness. I mean no harm to the people here. Will you please allow me to help you all figure out this disease?” Aya asks Catherine.
Avatar
"I can try to ease some of the tension. You have to remember, this disease did not come here until all these foreigners arrived. You'll have to understand, many people here blame you as the cause for this, and as the reason for those lost"
Avatar
“Interesting, so this may not be a native disease, but rather foreign. That already gives us a good starting point. And you’re sure about this? When did the first foreigners arrive? And how soon afterwards did the first symptoms start, do you know?” Aya says. “And yes, please, I would appreciate anything you could do to help ease the tension. At least between them and myself. I’m interested to get at the truth and help fix it. We care about you all and don’t want our presence to harm you,” Aya adds.
Avatar
“I’m talking about the uplifting project. None of the people in those tents are natives. You’re not native either. The projects have been operating for several months now but this is one of the first times we have been here in big numbers “
8:48 PM
“My people were homesick, and things here became a bit messy. My own fault. Regardless we are back now and want to be uplifted , but we also need to get a handle on the contagion”
Avatar
(I’m thoroughly confused… I’ll just play it out.) Aya is now getting irritated. “I never said I was a native. I know I’m not a native. I also know that the people in the tents in the square are not native. What I said was, this disease may not be a native disease. Meaning, not native to this planet since it came about after the uplifting project came here. In other words, a foreign disease brought from off-world.” Aya reiterates, hating the need to repeat herself. “So, you are not native to this planet either? What about the people behind you? Are none of these people native to this planet then? Including the locals behind you? How long ago did you all arrive here? And what became a bit messy?” Aya asks confused.
Avatar
(You asked where the foreigners were)
9:22 AM
“I am not native originally. My research team was stranded here after The Scream destroyed our vessel. Most of my crew were eaten. I was sold off as the slave wife to a rival tribe of the ones that had taken me as a peace offering. My husband
9:24 AM
Was killed in battle two years ago, around the time my gaiascopic gifts began to show. The tribe, who are natives, revered me as a shaman and nature speaker and it has allowed me to rise out of the slavery I was held in, to be their matriarch and leader. My tribe have been on this world for hundreds of years. They were settlers from the first age of human exploration , and have seen several attempts to graft civilization into this world fail, which leads to the primitive state you see them in now.
9:26 AM
“I led my people here to the “capital” a year ago when the protectorate and the UNW both tried to claim this planet. My greed got the best of me. I almost started a war between the two trying to extract the most favors and supplies for my tribe from them. They realized I was playing them against one another. It was best for me to leave. While that was happening the UNW worked out a deal with the Protectorate and now rightfully claim this world. Tensions have calmed and since they have, I’ve led my people back to see about giving them a better quality of life” (edited)

(Does that helps?)

Aya nods as Catherine’s explanation brings things back into a clear picture. “I see. What about this disease? What can you tell me about it? I already understand that it arrived with this latest batch of UNW people approximately 6 months ago. But can you shed more light on it? What does it do? What are the symptoms? Does it only affect the natives of the planet, or is it affecting everyone to include the UNW personnel? In essence, can you tell me anything else other than ‘it’s a disease’?” Aya responds, hoping that Catherine will be able to give her something to go on…and that she won’t have to repeat herself.
Avatar
(Ill try to make sure i get all of the questions answered) "It is a respiratory illness. There are coughs , fever, and aches in the bones. The fevers don't seem to break and its like the entire body becomes a dry sponge. They burn through water at an incredible rate. We're not sure what might be causing it. When the foreign contingent got here there were the normal runs of colds and allergies from what we could tell. THe body always needs time to get used to new air, new environments, all that. I guess we could say that as far as we know, it is only something that is hurting the locals in this way"
Avatar
(haha, sorry neko...i imagine it as part of the character).
Avatar
“Would it be possible to get some samples from a group of people that don’t have it…and then some samples from those that do? 2-3 men, women, boys and girls?” Aya asks while looking hopeful. “If not, I’ll make do with whatever samples I can get. But really need some clean ones and dirty ones,” Aya follows-up.
Avatar
"If you;ll allow me to be present when you take them to set the locals at ease I think collection should go fine. Can we agree to that?"
Avatar
“That’s no problem at all. I’m just here to help you all,” Aya responds. “When can we get started?” she asks.
Avatar
"You'll need to set up your clinic I'm assuming." Catherine says. "Why don't we meet back here in two hours. Check in with your people. I'll talk to mine, and will get you the healthy ones first so you can get those samples. Then we do the hard part together after. Do you think we can agree on that?"
Avatar
"Two hours, sounds good. See you then," Aya says and then turns to leave. For the next couple of hours Aya sets up the clinic. (will be back tomorrow or sunday at some time. a/c broke and it's almost 90 degrees in the house. dont want to run the computers too much...and still have homework due sat night...Edit: a/c repair should be here saturday morn). (edited)
Avatar
(if you had a preference for how you wanted things laid out, we can describe it, otherwise we can just say its done)
Avatar
(naw, no preference...thinking just a standard clinic in a tent setup. i don't need to get in the weeds with it)
Avatar
Catherine is waiting for you after a couple hours with one of each of the healthy types of local you were interested in. Some sort of baseline should be something you can establish now relative to the conditions on this world.
Avatar
As she puts the final touches on setting up her medical tent, Aya catches sight of Catherine waiting for her. Aya turns and moves to greet Catherine, “Hey Catherine. I appreciate your help. It would not be possible without you or your volunteers.” Aya then continues by addressing everyone that Catherine brought with her, “I also appreciate you all for volunteering. We’d like to take some samples from you all in order to establish a base line of what is healthy for you all. We need several different kinds of samples since we don’t know how this disease works and where it in the body it lives. The people here in the tent will explain what they are going to do as they do it. We will need some blood, cultures and possibly urine samples. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them or me. Catherine and I will be there watching over things the entire time.” “Again, if you have any questions about what we’re doing, please ask. If you have no immediate questions, then please come inside and we’ll get started,” Aya motions for them to come inside. (Understand I have no control over the “team”. I’m assuming they will be helping out with this…they’ll just be in the background. Unless they are doing a ton of other things in the background that aren’t related to this? Therefore, based on my current understanding, Aya plans to oversee the process and be there to answer questions and reassure while samples are taken.)
Avatar
(you got it perfect. They;ll handle the background work)
8:58 AM
None of them have questions and begin lining up to come into the tent, each of them getting samples taken under Catherine's watch.
8:58 AM
"Assuming you've got some more questions for me doc. Can I help at all?
Avatar
“The only other question I have right now is how to best get in touch with you. Or you with me if there’s an emergency. Maybe I have an extra comm device around here somewhere. If I could find one, would you use it?” Aya responds. “Other than that, we’ll just get started on looking at these samples and standby for getting the dirty ones.” Aya adds.
Avatar
“I’m not a complete barbarian” she smiles , holding up a battered but functional compad. “I’ve got a solar charger back in the buildings we made camp inside of. I’ll make sure we have one another’s contact information. “
9:07 PM
“Everyone keeps telling me I should upgrade and get a new one but this ones been with me through everything. Feels a little strange getting rid of it. Anyway. Yes. Samples. I am here for whatever you need me to do. I’ve explained to my group that you’re here to actually help and that you were sent here because this is your job. You’ve got the goodwill of the tribe for trying “
Avatar
Aya smiles and nods her head, “As soon as the team is done getting the samples we need, we’ll get going on analyzing them. You can take your people back and then let me know when you’re ready for the next part, collecting the dirty samples.”
Avatar
Samples are collected and a baseline for healthy tissue, skin, blood, and other vitals are collected across the several volunteers Catherine has brought in. Your staff sending them back home with extra envelopes of humanitarian rations has sick volunteers very easy for Catherine to round up. She is not wearing protective gear, having some sort of psionic mechanism for keeping herself free of the disease
Avatar
(So, Catherine came back with the other people? Just making sure, thought I was going to have to go to them)
Avatar
(Yeah. She’s come back with others who are sick now. There haven’t been any problems , she’s rolled her checks well too for convincing them while you’ve been working )
Avatar
(Cool, I wanted to do something like give them extra food…didn’t quite know how to address it. So glad you kind of auto-worked it in.) Surprised that Catherine is back so quickly, Aya makes sure she is suited up in her protective gear, and the team in theirs, before she let’s them in, “Ok, same as before Catherine. The team will collect the samples and then you can bring them take them back. I’ll oversee the procedure while at the same time you and I can reassure our patients and answer any questions they may have.” “If you need help getting them back, we’ll help as best we can. If not, we’ll get right to analyzing things,” Aya adds.
Avatar
“We might need a couple wheelchairs if you’re taking blood. Especially in the older ones. Whatever this is, it’s just sapping their strength. I guess if you figure it out they’ll name this after you at least” she tries to find an attempt at humor and laughs a bit hoping others will do the same. Years of savagery have eroded some of her people skills.
Avatar
“We’ll set you up with some wheelchairs. I’ll have my team get them, or request some, and you’ll have them for your return trip,” Aya tells Catherine, “Hopefully we’ll have some news for you soonish. I’ll contact you as soon as we do.”

The sample collection is complete and you have a mix of healthy and infected tissue. You’re beginning to work on a cure with the rest of the medical team. Samples will need to separate and some sort of antibody will need to be synthesized. The last thing to do is to get some sort of sample from the foreigners here .
Avatar
Ok, now that we have all the samples of the natives, all that’s left is to get some of the arrivals, thought Aya. Suppose I should go talk to that one guy. Never got his name, but I can look for an entourage of suck ups I suppose. Aya leaves the tent area to find the person who met her when she landed. (Intent is to search the other parts of the square for that person. He’s probably surrounded by others. If she can’t find him, she’ll ask around.)

He is very difficult to track down and your efforts send you racing across the length of the large encampment several times before you manage to catch them leaving the medical sector , looking for you. (Full disclosure, I’m about to deploy next week. As the time gets close, I get more stressed trying to tie up all the loose ends for my family. I’ll still be posting, even while deployed, but there may be times of slowness…especially while I travel…may not post for 2-3 days until I get settled.) “That may have been why it took me so long to find you,” Aya remarked. “I need some samples from those that arrived here in the past few months. If you all arrived at the same time, then anyone will do. If there was a staggard arrival, then I’d like samples from the various groups who arrived here over the months. I’m hoping that there was just one arrival. Or a small number of them, rather than a constant stream,” Aya added. “Anyways, would you be able to help send some people our way so that we can get some samples?” Aya asks.
Avatar
(Life comes first. Safe travels) “There were two major arrivals. The first was the UNW and EP government arrivals when the initial negotiations with the locals began. Then later we had the international arrival when all the various factions you see here now doing the uplift arrived. We would have to get something from every faction I believe”
Avatar
Aya sighs. And this just turned into a mess. I kind of figured as much. Nothing worth doing is ever easy I suppose. “That’s going to take some doing. Would you be able to facilitate that? In order to find the origin of it, we’ll have to sample each faction. I mean, we could get lucky and find the cause in the first couple factions, but it rarely works out that way,” Aya responds. “Just out of curiosity, how many are here from off-world for the uplift? Oh, and what was your name? Don’t believe I caught it the first time,” Aya asks
Avatar
"Sornos. Sorry, I see so many people in the course of a normal day, and so many of them I never see again. We are looking at Ad-Astra, The Paragons of Light, Rigers Corps of Engineers, aiya Tech, The Aphroditic Guild of Exploration and Trade, and then the governments of both the UNW and the Elysium Protectorate. So we're looking at 7 groups in total invested here right now. "
Avatar
“7 groups. Got it. And, Sornos, since you seem to be the director of all things here, and therefore your authority is already established and known by all, would you be able to help me by directing each group to send some individuals to us to have samples taken? It would be greatly appreciated,” Aya responded. “Unless you have an assistant whom is just as well known and speaks for you?” Aya added.
Avatar
"I'll handle it myself. There is a saying about getting things done the right way and I feel like you're familiar with it based on our conversation so far. We need to be diplomatic about who the group responsible is though. The locals will riot against whoever the culprit is if word gets out to them" (edited)
Avatar
“Understood.” Aya says, “I’ll head back to my tent and standby for the incoming people. And again, thank you for your help.” With that, Aya turns to walk back to her med tent and wait.
Avatar
The group from Ad-Astra comes first. They are one of the larger contingents here and they were selected at random to arrive and give samples for you. Most of them are wearing very modern uniforms or working fatigues and seem to have a vast selection of gear and convenience items brought with them.
Avatar
Aya watches the arriving people. Directing as needed, but mostly standing back and letting her crew do their work. Hmmm, these people have a lot of stuff. Aya scans the equipment they are carrying with them out of curiosity. (So, Aya notices all of the equipment they are carrying. While not really looking for anything in particular, does anything stand out? If not, she’ll probably just continue watching and directing where needed.)
Avatar
(I would say probably more of a disregard for this being a frontier place. Lots of high maintenance type things with them. Almost here as more tourists working out of a spa than actual working)
Avatar
(Gotcha. In that case, Aya will watch over things as they progress.)
Avatar
After about an hour and far more complaining than the situation warrants, the Ad-Astra samples are taken and collected. Analysis will begin once we have everything. You do notice that some of them were very concerned about the humidity in here, and could not leave their noses alone
7:24 AM
The Paragons of Light are next, priests, priestesses and pilgrims serving the taros Lady of Fire, known as Ogneya. They are a serious and devout group and thankfully do not try to convert anyone while they are having their own samples taken. They are struggling with the death of their leader in fighting to the galactic east, and the organization is struggling to find meaning for itself despite losing its spiritual anchor so soon
Avatar
Aya makes note of the nose touching and comments about the humidity. After which she then watches over the Paragons of Light, noting nothing in particular about them. (I got a reprieve of sorts. Will be sticking around another 2 weeks before traveling. Lots of last minute changes.)
Avatar
AGET is next. They are mostly Taros and seem frustrated by everything as the disease does not seem to be bothering Taros, only humans. None of them display any symptoms. After AGET, Rigers Corps of Engineers and Aiya tech arrive almost together. The two groups have formed fast friendships here as they both have strong ties to expert builders and innovative astro-engineers. Their samples are collected and one of the assistants waves you over to a display showing all of them are carriers, but are not sick themselves, and it does not seem they have ever actually been sick with it.
Avatar
Well, looks like we found the source, but still need to finish the other groups just to make sure, Aya thought to herself. “Ok people, keep testing the groups as they arrive. While we finish up testing the groups, get a team started on analyzing the actual disease and see if we can get a work-up on it. Then we’ll start trying to work on a counter to it,” Aya tells the team. Once the orders are given, Aya tries to contact Sornos via comms and let him know of the progress. (Intent here is to continue testing the remaining groups while trying to begin work on a counter / vaccine / cure / etc…giving orders to people that I can’t give orders to without henchman skill…)
Avatar
Catherine stops in to check on things as work begins on some kind of retroviral agent to be distributed. "Six more have just come down with it. All of them are children. Have you figured out what do to about this thing?"
Avatar
“As a matter of fact, we just found some of the carriers. We’re already working on a retroviral, and I’m trying to get a hold of someone here to see if we can quarantine those who have it…or at least confine them to this square,” Aya responds while waiting for Sornos to answer his comms.
Avatar
You can see a connection has been established with Sornos. He will be able to reply to you instantly upon getting a message.
3:23 PM
"Alright, I'll round them up and start getting them together. Knowing there is a cure will be motivation enough for them to come out. My tribe owes you a favor"
Avatar
“Naw, you don’t owe me anything. Just keep them back for now until we have something more realized. We’ll work as quickly as we can,” Aya responds. Aya turns her attention to typing out a quick message to Sornos about what was found and a recommendation to either quarantine or confine the two carrier groups to the square until a counter can be made. Now that the communicating is taken care of, let’s see if we can finish the groups and hurry with a response, Aya thinks to herself as she begins to help on the research.
Avatar
Soronos and the polity soldiers he is with will enforce the quarantine. He asks that you be as expedient as possible so this does not create an incident but commends you for your work
Avatar
Aya acknowledges the message and then immediately gets back to work on a counter to the virus.
Avatar
by nightfall you have your first several trial doses of the retroviral agent. The worst of Catherine's community are not ambulatory anymore and therefore with precautions, you'll need to go to them
Avatar
Aya uses her comms to contact Catherine, “Catherine, we have a few trial doses of the retro ready to go. I want to stress that these are untested trials. However, I understand that you have some people who are in bad shape. If you can give me an escort to where they are, we can try these. It’s your decision.”
Avatar
She affirms. It’s recommended yiu bring some kind of vac suit or sealed environment with you when you set out to her area as the conditions have deteriorated rapidly
Avatar
You also see you have a message from UNW strategic command , which is to be opened when this concludes. From the sparse details provided there is an urgent mission to Polychrome being planned and your skill set is highly desired
Avatar
Aya notices the urgent message waiting for her. Ok, I need to hurry this up. I feel like I’m falling behind. Catherine, I’m way a head of you…but your reminder was still appreciated. “Ok team, we’re going to test this antiviral. Whoever is coming with me needs to grab some kind of sealed suit. Bring an extra or two also. And let’s go,” Aya tells her medical team. She then grabs her usual equipment, the antivirals, a suit and let’s the escort know that they’re ready to depart. (If this is a bad assumption, I’ll reverse course a bit…but I’m assuming we’d have sealed suits with us, correct? We are here for an outbreak and they loaded the ship prior to my arrival.)
Avatar
|(yeah locker on the ship has an armored vac suit if you want something with a bit of protection)
Avatar
(I'll take that then. Probably just put it on right before I leave? don't think carrying it all the way would be great. Besides not sure how far it is. )

The suit is not as bulky as you would expect and you’re able to make the short hike over to where Catherine has her people camped out amid the ruins of old buildings. A few guards in similar protective suits have come with you to ensure the vital medicine you carry reaches its destination
Avatar
(is Catherine visible?)
Avatar
(She is not)
Avatar
Making sure that her suit is sealed properly, Aya starts looking for Catherine. Asking people here and there if they can point her towards Catherine.
Avatar
You pass dozens of sick on your hunt for her. Rumors fly, stating she wandered off into the woods as though she was in a trance, or some kind of psionic vision. For right now, your focus is on the patients here- and hunting her can come later.
Avatar
Well, doesn’t look as though I’ll find Catherine before doing the injections. That’s unfortunate. I can’t just start injecting her people willy nilly. Aya turns to the nearest group of locals and asks, “Hey, excuse me, after Catherine who is next in charge? We have some anti-virals here to try on your sick.”
Avatar
A warrior looking man is presented to you. His armor is primitive and he seems to be above any symptoms yet but that is not a guarantee of future health. He has the same story of her wandering off into the woods, and is very eager for you to save as much of his tribe as you can.
7:07 PM
As an off worlder some do not trust her entirely and she has a history of trying to play powerful figures against each other. She has done this before and there are quiet whispers and fears that she may be again doing this now, but nobody knows for sure
Avatar
“Hi, my name is Aya. As you may know, I’ve been working with Catherine to help your people. We’ve identified the virus and have come up with some medicine. This is a trial run. We’re not 100% sure if it’ll work. I suggest trying it on one of your people who is the sickest. However, if you have a few who may die soon, you may want us to use the medicine on all of them. We’re ready to go right now. Which do you want? A single trial first, or treat all of the sickest right away?” Aya asks.
Avatar
"I don't think some of these people, especially the kids, have the time for a full trial. I trust you doc, do what you can for them. No one here will blame you if things dont work. Once this is over, we should go look for Catherine. I...don't have a good feeling about all this"
Avatar
“Ok then. Let’s get started. Show us the way to your infirmary and we’ll start administering the medicine,” Aya responds.
Avatar
The children are the worst off by a longshot. Parents and caretakers huddle near them. Some are sick from contact themselves and all are showing signs of being exhausted by the tension this disease has brought to the community.
Avatar
(How many doses do we have? Enough for all the kids? Enough for kids and caregivers?...for everyone in the camp?)
Avatar
(Everyone in the camp)
12:25 PM
Hours pass and by the time you finish with precautionary does for those who have not been sick yet, it seems fevers are beginning to break just slightly in the worst of the cases. Conventional medical care will have to follow and your team can be summoned to handle this. The tribal elder pulls you aside. "Appreciate what you've done doc. Did you think about what I said at all? The way Catherine has been acting, it just does not sit right with me. We might be going on a chase for nothing, but for her to just leave when the situation is this bad?"
Avatar
“It is a bit curious. But we can’t assume that it’s good or bad. Regardless, it’s worth investigating,” Aya responds. “I’ll help, but in what way do you see me helping?” Aya asks.
Avatar
“Someone to watch my back, and if she is up to her old tricks your word as a UNW authority holds a lot more than mine. If I’m the only one calling foul on her it looks like local politics. If a UNW agent is backing my story now we have an issue they’re forced to look into”
Avatar
“I don’t really know if I’m an agent per se, but I’ll do what I can. Do you know where she went? Or do you have some way to track her?” Aya asks. “If you do, let’s get going,” she continues. Aya then turns to her team and says, “Hey, it seems as though everything is fairly routine here and the patients are improving. If you all have it, there’s a small situation I’m going to help the tribal elder with. I’ll be back soon. If something critical happens, contact me on comms.” Aya then turns back to the elder ready to go.
Avatar
He does not have electronic means to track her, but he has been hunting all his life and should be able to track her from other means. "If you are armed, you'll want it handy. We're dealing with a possible crazy person, and the jungle wildlife"
Avatar
(Ok, so, now I’m leaving…or rather, tomorrow I am. I’ll be traveling for a few days and then will have to get my room setup. I’ll be checking discord off and on while traveling. I’ll try to respond, but will only have my ipad…so typing a lot of stuff wont happen. I’ll be keeping it real short. I “should be” up and going again by the 15-16th?) “I’m armed. I have a pistol. So, after you,” Aya says.
Avatar
(Sounds good to me!)
2:43 PM
"Alright, we're going to take a look north of the city, the way we came in to occupy these buildings. Maybe we can find a trail or something that she left behind. "
Avatar
(A quick thought just entered my mind. Aya is still in the armored containment suit. Not sure how quickly the medicine works, guessing they may still be contagious. But she doesn't need to traipse around the woods in it. Should I leave her in it? Or change once we're out of range of the others?)
Avatar
(It only takes a couple minutes to doff armor. If you don't want to bring it with you, we can leave it behind)
Avatar
(Don't think I have the room / weight for it...so, I'll leave it behind...once I'm out of the virus danger area ofc.)
Avatar
Once you leave the danger area under the care of your medical team, you doff the suit and prepare to follow the elder into the woods. "My name is Marco. I am sorry I did not introduce myself sooner. Caught up with all of this" he gestures to the air and wilds around him
Avatar
(Ok, back up and running. I'll start up again here soon...about to head into work, have allergies like crazy over here so am a bit sick, and trying to catch up on class work. But I'll post shortly.)
Avatar
(I'm about to go on vacation myself, so do what you can when you can, and I'll get something up when I can)
Avatar
(I am back)
Avatar
“Hi Marco, I’m Aya. Nice to meet you. I’ll follow your lead since you’re the tracker and know the area,” Aya responds.
Avatar
"If she's done this, we may need to apprehend her. Be ready" Marco says, before looking at the ground and moving north with purpose. The woods are quiet as you move through them, the wildlife deciding it has other places to be. Despite being able to bend the natural foliage to her will, Catherine has not bothered to conceal her trail. You can see grooved footprints on the path leading through the trees in her direction of flight, from 250m away through thick brush and trees you can see a light. It is flickering and inconstant, like a bonfire or lantern.
Avatar
Upon seeing the light up head, Aya thought to herself, Well, that was quick. I mean, she left tracks that I probably could have followed myself. Wonder how this will turn out? “Marco, I see a light up ahead. Could be her, or her camp,” Aya says. “Are you sure that this confrontation is going to be negative? Couldn’t she have a good reason for it?” Aya adds.
Avatar
"She might, I expected it being more difficult to find her, but maybe she wants this talk for some reason. Be ready, and be patient."
Avatar
“Well, let’s get going and see this through”. I guess I’ll be the ultimate neutral party since I’m still not sure what he’s so up in arms about.
Avatar
(I think it might have gotten lost since we had some large gaps of IRL time in between various stages of this adventure but Marco is suspecting Catherine may have been encouraging the disease to spread, or basically might be trying to spin this tragedy for her own benefit somehow, as she has a pattern of shifty behavior in the past, and now has suddenly vanished at what should have been a fairly triumphant and hopeful moment for her tribe)
Avatar
(It’s no big deal. It’s part of her personality anyways. She’s quick to make up her mind depending on the circumstances. I’m not the greatest writer, so I don’t necessarily do long paragraphs of what she’s thinking. Needless to say, she figures “it’s always the hard way” and just pushes forward to get it done…especially if she feels time is of the essence. I could have “asked” for clarification at any time. So, I’m not worried. I just work it into the story on my end somehow.)
Avatar
Approaching the fire you can see three figures there. One of them stands up and sprints into the woods upon hearing the snap of branches and swaying of leaves at your approach. The other two remain where they're sitting, warming themselves with the flames though they have some surprise and exclamation as what you assume to be Catherine runs deeper into the jungle.
Avatar
Aya approaches the fire and the remaining two people cautiously. “Hello, my name is Aya. I’m a doctor with the UNW. We are looking for Catherine, who I assume was the one who ran off. Could you tell us anything about what’s going on and why she seems so reluctant to speak to anyone?” (edited)
Avatar
“Catherine was just here. She was shaking almost like she was sick. Kept muttering something about her boss was going to kill her and was pacing around all crazy”
Avatar
“Thank you for sharing. I don’t mean you or Catherine any harm, I’m just concerned about her and what’s going on. Can you give me any more information? Who is her boss? And do you perhaps know where she was running off to? Or anything else? And again, I really appreciate your help,” Aya says with an expression of deep concern on her face and almost pleading like eyes.
Avatar
"We did not think she had a boss. That is not a word we really use here, no industry, no jobs. She looked like she was not feeling well"
Avatar
“Ok, well, we appreciate your help.” Aya then turns to Marco and says, “We should get going before she gets too far ahead.” Aya then motions in the direction that the third person ran off in, waiting for Marco to take the lead.
Avatar
(did we want to sneak after her, or follow openly?)
Avatar
(That’s a very good question. However, I feel like it would be cheating to change it now. In Aya’s mind, things are getting murkier with the Catherine situation, but not to the point where she feels the need to switch into “combat” mode. Besides which, Catherine took off running…so it’s not like she herself is being super quiet. Aya’s thought was just to follow…not run after. At the first sign of things getting more “interesting”, Aya would go into stealth mode…especially knowing that Catherine is possibly going to see her boss. Aya and Marco will move more cautiously, but not stealthily. Upon seeing structures or something, I believe they would take a knee and discuss things .. like how to approach. Even still, Aya may just walk right on in since she only wants to talk. We’ll see how it plays out. Hope that long winded explanation covers our thinking. Heh. EDIT: Or, I could just say, Aya would follow Marco's lead since he's the tracker...Aya can't control him, so she would just follow his lead. However, in Aya's mind, she would follow cautiously, but not stealthily...yet.) (edited)
Avatar
(Let’s do a sneak dex just for clarity and if I need to use it for something then)
Avatar

Avatar
Cautiously you begin moving through the brush having departed from the camp of trackers. You can see a bobbing lantern ahead as Catherine is focused more on flight than keeping stealthy. You can see it suddenly cartwheel in the air and a Yelp of pain as she looses her balance
Avatar
“Marco, up ahead. Looks like she may have fallen and injured herself. Careful of the terrain up ahead, but let’s see if we can move quickly and quietly to get up there,” Aya half whispers to Marco.
Avatar
Catherine is laying in a clearing and seems to be clutching her leg. Her cries of pain are silent but the fracture looks severe. She is 20m from you and you are concealed
Avatar
Aya looks to see if she's armed or if there's anyone else around the treeline...especially the far side treeline.
Avatar
Catherine has her spear, the one you've seen her use before but it is as though its being used more as a walking stick or lever right now
Avatar
Aya quietly moves to stand behind a tree and then voices loud enough for Catherine to hear, “Catherine. I’m not here to fight you. You are hurt. Will you let me help you?”
Avatar
"Why...why are you out here?" she asks, wary, but wounded, and unable to keep her thoughts together for long
Avatar
“There was concern when you left abruptly just as the anti-virulent was developed. I’m just here to talk and find out what’s going on. And, to help you since you’re injured. Will you let me help?” Aya responds.
Avatar
"Alright, then we will talk. Or talk while you work. Ask your questions"
Avatar
Aya moves out from behind the tree. Arms a little out-stretched to her sides to show she’s not holding any weapons. She moves cautiously, yet with some purpose. Once she arrives at Catherine, Aya, showing no sudden moves, takes off her backpack to get out her medkit and starts attending to Catherine. While working on Catherine, Aya begins, “So, there was some concern when you left just as the anti-viral was developed. I’ve heard some express concern that your disappearing act has happened before. Possibly in regard to nefarious activity. The people back at the camp said you mentioned something about a boss. I know that I only have one side of the story. I was wondering if you would be willing to share your side of the story with me. Why are you seemingly running away? Who is this “boss”? And why are you so panicked or scared?” (edited)
Avatar
“My boss ? They’re hard to pin down exactly but they’ve promised to help me elevate my tribe. They’ve got their own interests in all this”
Avatar
Aya sighs. I really must learn to ask one question at a time. Most people are too stupid to handle answering multiple questions. I’ll just chalk it up to the pain. “Ok, so, it’s an organization. Who are “they”…are they native or off-worlder’s?” Aya asks. Aya moves as slow as she can, without putting Catherine's life in danger, since she has a few more questions, but Catherine seems to be able to handle only one question at a time. EDIT: (Edit was restating last paragraph so that I didn't need an OOC Caveat.) (edited)

“They’re off world. His name was Mazzio. Said he was in charge of some planets west of here, by the protectorate”
Avatar
(Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that what the UNW is here to do right now? Or did I miss something understand something?)
Avatar
(Mazzio is the leader of SCAF, from what she's saying he has approached her in secret , we don't know why yet since we didnt get that far in the conversation)
Avatar
(Yep, I'm tracking that. EDIT: Disregard what I wrote in this post if you read it. I scrolled back to get my answer. You said that the UNW was here on an uplift mission at the beginning of the mission. I just wanted to be sure of that because I was wondering how to word something in my conversation with Catherine. I wasn't asking about Catherine, I was asking why the UNW was here. I couldn't remember.) (edited)
Avatar
(Ah got you. Yes this being a world on within border of UNW space the UNW already “owns” the planet, they’re trying to ensure their new citizens have access to the same quality of life everyone else has. SCAF sounds like they’re actively trying to change the flag/own the place)
9:57 AM
(Or at least challenge the UNW here somehow by making the task difficult

(Sil was a former citizen and left because basically thought he could do everything better, so he has a grudge )
Avatar
“So, correct me if I’m wrong, but what I am hearing you say is that you are concerned for your people and want the best for them. What I don’t understand is why you are working with an individual when the UNW is here, with a sizable force, in UNW space, working to uplift your planet and your people right now. I’m left wondering if there is some ulterior motive. Are you personally getting something out of this beyond just helping your people? Or are you beholden to this Mazzio in some way that you can’t refuse?” Aya asks Catherine, worried that she won’t actually answer the questions posed. Perhaps I should re-word it into one question. Taking into account the “Lowest Common Denominator” and all that. “In other words, why are you working with Mazzio?” “And are you in trouble with him…do you need help?” Damn! That’s actually 2-3 questions. Sigh, hopefully she’ll be able to answer them all. You’d think that most people would have a brain to handle more than 1 question in a go. Meh, maybe it’s the pain. The painkiller should be taking effect already though. (edited)
Avatar
(The one questions thing is more my processing issues than a character being stupid. Im trying really hard to slow down when reading .) “Im not in trouble. The UNW cheated me of a more prosperous future and the people here are still begging for scraps. Showing them the UNW cannot be trusted would oust them from the world. Mazzio had promised a new psychic enlightening here, a return to how things were before the scream”
Avatar
“So, I’m confused, Catherine. And perhaps it’s my naivete since I’m still young and have been focused on my medical career, but isn’t the UNW effort to uplift the planet just that? Trying to return things to how they were pre-scream?” “Never mind, that’s not important. How did the UNW cheat you out of a more prosperous future and relegate your people to beg for scraps?” “I can’t help but think there may be a misunderstanding. Or, if there wasn’t one, perhaps I could talk to someone on behalf of you and your people? I can’t promise anything, but I am willing to help and see what I can do.”
Avatar
"They dragged their feet on the uplift process. Mazzaio believed some kind of engineered disease would drive off the off-world help, and SCAF would be free to move in. He said the bio-engineers on Phio would be able to shut it off once the UNW and the other organizations left. Getting it here and planting it on them was easy"
7:45 AM
"The Protectorate was also interested in this world. Everyone wanted the tax money, the labor, but no one cared for the people here, SCAF promised to do just that"
Avatar
(Neko, again, I dont remember....the locals were the only ones getting sick? sure, there was a couple off-worlders who had the sniffles or something odd... but it was the locals who took the brunt of it and were dying, correct?)
Avatar
(Yeah so sil lied or something went wrong )
Avatar
“Well, as I said, I’m not entirely sure about the uplift process. I thought they tried once, and something precluded it. So, they are here a second time to try again. I only half paid attention since I was here for one reason only. And that was to save your people.” “Now, that said, it seems to me that something is a bit off. This Mazzaio engineered a disease that would drive off UNW personnel. However, the only thing the disease does is kill your people. Not the UNW personnel. Doesn’t that seem odd to you?” “And while the disease kills your people, it is the UNW who are concerned enough to request special help. And in very little time we are to make an anti-viral to save your people.” “I realize I’m a bit biased, since I’m UNW, but it seems to me that this Mazzaio person has lied to you and used you. Or, I suppose, the other option would be that something went wrong on his end. Regardless, it was not Mazzaio who helped you as your people got sick and died. It was the UNW.” “I wish you would consider talking to the uplift leader and express your concerns and desires for you people. I’m willing to help you during your talk. But, if you continue with Mazzaio, I’m afraid that you may find yourself with no friends willing to help you. The UNW won’t take kindly to it, and your own people may turn their backs on you. It was one of them who enlisted my aid in finding you after you ran off. They were already judging you negatively.” “You are free to make your own decision. I just want you to be able to make the best one possible. Now, I’m almost done with your leg. It’s up to you if you want to continue on to Mazzaio or come back with me and try to work through the issues and concerns you have regarding the uplift with the UNW.”
Avatar
"I think the choice is clear. As you said, something went wrong, or I was just a tool for whatever he was planning. It all seems to clear now to see you explain it this way. The best thing I can do is come back with you, make my case to uplift leadership, and await whatever justice the UNW decides to doll out. This was selfish. This is the third time I have allowed myself to be a tool for someone else. I am doing more harm than good here"
Avatar
“If it’s any comfort to you, based on my perception of the situation, I think you’ve made the right decision.” “Now, let’s see if we can get you out of here.” “Marco, I need help making some kind of litter to help carry Catherine back,” Aya calls out. (Intent here is to use what we can find around us in nature to make a stretcher / litter to carry her back…assuming she’s unable to walk well. Branches, vines, etc… perhaps using branches and blankets that may be in a survival kit or medical kit.)
Avatar
(She would be able to use gaiascopics to make something too since she controls plants)
10:45 AM
Catherine is able to get sticks and vines twisted into something of a litter to help you keep her aloft. Her powers over nature are mighty but she finds herself unable to do more than watch as vines carry and deposit her gently onto the woven plant form to be transported
Avatar
Well now, how utterly convenient. Now if she could only use the plants to carry her back as well.” “Ok Marco, if you’d be so kind as to grab an end, let’s get going and get her back,” Aya says as they finish getting Catherine on and grabs the other end. Once all ready to go, Aya let’s Marco, who is on the front end, lead the way back.
Avatar
Returning to the settlement, Catherine does her best to keep the vines forming some kind of covering for the litter so you can get her to the colonial authorities in peace. It is not hard to find the administrator you've been working with so far. Passing Catherine's tribe huddled in the ruins of the skyscraper they've temporarily inhabited, you can see some are already showing improvement
Avatar
I hope there wasn’t any issues with the treatment while I was gone. Pretty sure the team would have been able to take care of anything. They didn’t try to contact me, so… Aya thinks to herself as she passes the tribe. “Mr. Administrator, this is Catherine. She is the leader of the locals to this planet and was recently injured out in the jungle. She has some concerns about this uplift effort of which you need to be aware. I would appreciate it if you would talk to her.” “Catherine, this is the Administrator. If you’d like me to stay, I will. Otherwise, I’ll be on my way.”
Avatar
“WhTs to happen to me after this?” She asks weakly, her head swimming a bit as the pain of her wounds starts to catch up with the ebb of adrenaline
Avatar
“What happens next is completely up to you. But I highly suggest you talk with the administrator and come to some sort of equitable agreement. To uplift a world and its people is a large project that needs everyone working together. There may be some give and take on both sides. But give each other a chance.” Seeing that Catherine seems to be in pain, Aya gives her a few pain pills.

I didn't type it out, but Aya was thinking that the only thing she would mention on the side ... meaning not in ear shot of Catherine ... was that someone named Mazzio was trying to undermine things here...and his affiliation. Other than that, Aya wasn't going to say anything about Catherine's involvement. Aya left that up to Catherine...kind of a test to see what kind of character she had and if she had really learned her lesson. But Aya wasn't going to involve herself in the petty stuff...just mention Mazzio privately to the administrator.)

Catherine does mention Mazzio was involved, but says nothing as to the depth of her own personal involvement as the time goes on. There are a few occasions where she even changes a few details to make it look like she resisted more, or tried to stand up for the virtue of the UNW but was found wanting, or was overpowered by other outside forces

To that end, a mission is being authorized for the anarchic planet of Polychrome. The ship in orbit will land and introduce you to the team, as well as provide transport to the planet. The spike journey will be many days and there will be time to learn more about the target world on board.

(Before I post what I have written up...is this a new ship in orbit trying to pick me up? Or are we taking my ship? If this is a new ship, what happens to my ship?)
Avatar
(Its a new ship with the other npc team members aboard. I figured you’d meet them and both would travel to polychrome)
Avatar
Well, I’m done here anyways… and this seems like an interesting follow-on. Let’s find out what it’s all about. Aya uses her comms device to single that she’s ready for pickup.
Avatar
There is a flash of light as the teleportation pads lock on to you and you appear on the deck of a UNW free merchant , with ten soldiers readying gear for transport and doing things you’d expect from the constantly vigilant. The ships captain is waiting there as well and as the teleportation coils cool he signals it’s safe to come out of the chamber.
Avatar
Aya exits the chamber thinking, Wow, that’s pretty cool. I need to get one of these. Aya looks at the captain, “Hold on a second.” Aya then sends a quick message to her ship saying that she got picked up for a short notice mission and to finish up there and she’ll contact them later. Aya then turns her attention back to the captain. “Ok, sorry about that. I’m Aya. What is this short notice mission that you need help on?” (You know, I'm re-reading that and realize that you already outlined the mission on the communique...lol. Meh, I'll let it ride. Maybe the captain has extra info.) (Second edit was deleting my over copy. I accidentally copied and re-pasted the prior post.) (edited)

“I’ve detailed it in the communication you were sent. We aren’t sure of conditions on the ground or any secondary objectives of merit and wont until you begin working up the primary objective. They have things we need and contacts among the various groups fighting on the planet is a good pipeline to get this advanced technology for ourselves - especially before the CBSS or anyone else”
Avatar
“Ok, well, I’m ready to go. Is there someplace where I can get a shower and some sleep? Maybe restock a little? … Oh, and how long will the trip take?”
Avatar
“You’ve got your own ship for that , I expect you’ll be traveling aboard it. I brought you here because I thought you might want to meet the team you’ll be heading down to the planet with before we get there , you’ll be relying on each other once you deploy to that hellscape of a planet “
Avatar
Aya gives a little laugh and shakes her head. Guess that answers what I’m going to do with my ship. Gotta love misunderstandings. Sigh, whatever… “Hold on a sec.” Aya then sends another communique to her ship telling them to standby. They have a new mission and she’ll tell them about it once she’s back on board. “Ok, introduce me.”

In the troop bay you can see that a medic was sorely needed. Four weapons specialists, a combat engineer, two rookies who dont quite have a specialization yet, a comms specialist and their assistant, and a translator/cultural expert all make up the team- absent any kind of actual doctor. You can see they have all been issued an incredible amount of PPE, and filters especially. Issued uniforms and armor are painted slate gray, and are absent any kind of insignia, polity rankings, names, or any other identifying information.
Avatar
“That’s a lot of PPE. What kind of gear is being recommended and/or required for this op?” (Would the gear I’m seeing also be aboard my ship? Since I’m taking my ship and not travelling with the other team members, I’m kind of assuming I need to kit out myself? Just seeing if there’s anything I need to ask for before heading back to my ship.)
8:36 PM
"We've got an armored vac suit here for you, another reason we wanted you to come aboard. We also wanted to pass the files with what is known at the planet right now. Former corporate leadership there has hijacked a spike ship and fled. There is chaos in the streets and an alien bio-weapon to deal with. Polychrome itself is underground, though the spaceport we'd be landing at is on the surface with elevators to access the city itself. We also know there was once a system defense fleet of non-spike system ships. It's safe to presume they've turned pirate or are willing to shoot if it means cargo and more legs to their supply holds"

(I need another 24 hours before i respond. Will be redeploying in a couple of weeks, but the professor got the dates wrong for assignment turn-ins for this new class. so have been rushing to get things done. Will post tomorrow.)

“Thank you, captain, I appreciate your thoughtfulness. I’ll take that suit and the files. I’ll review the files aboard my ship. Will our ships be traveling together, or will we make our separate ways to the spaceport?” (Sorry, you waited 48 hours for that little input...)
Avatar
"We'll be traveling together across UNW territory, and into the target system. Two ships are better than one- we believe that their system defense ship (no spike, so unable to leave Polychrome) may have resorted to piracy, the extra numbers will make anyone out there watching with hostile intent strongly reconsider their choice"
Avatar
“Sounds good. Anything else I should be aware of? Otherwise, you can introduce me to the team.”
Avatar
(I’ll make you a document with who’s all in it, probably won’t be what you’re irl used to but suspend disbelief )

(No problem at all. In fact, we can just wash over it and say she met them. Don't put yourself out if it doesn't really matter for the big picture.)

The team is a pair of twin heavy weapons specialist affectionately known as “the boys.” A marksman, a computer expert , an assistant team leader and 6 riflemen constitute the rest of the squad. One of them carries a heavy cutter, a rare weapon in post scream times. Your specialization as medic rounds out the team , along with you being named team lead
Avatar
Aya introduces herself to the team. After a little while conversing with them, she turns back to the captain. “Alright, thank you again. I’ve got the files, the suit, and I’ve met the team. If there’s nothing else, or if I haven’t forgotten anything, you can beam me back to my ship and we can get going.”

The ships both seem to have concealed themselves against detection. Any watching system ships will be unaware that their sector has been penetrated. A six hour flight to the spaceport is in order, and A comms message floating in a comms buoy begins displaying across your screen. Amana Lin starport- the only way down to the city- has been flooded by The Stain. The CBSS crew states their operative made it to the planets surface using an armored vac suit, and that the elevators still have power. Exposure should be kept as limited as possible.

(Communication between ships doesn't affect stealth, correct?)

Aya contacts the freelancer ship, “Seems like we made it into the system. We’ll meet you in orbit. Are we taking a shuttle down or using your teleporter?” Aya thinks for a moment and then asks, “Also, what is your plan for egress?”
Avatar
“Teleportation is how we are getting down. To get out you’ll need to make your way back to the surface before we can teleport you back or use the shuttle.
Avatar
"I'll meet you in orbit then," Aya responds. Aya then has the ship move into orbit. (edited)
Avatar
Transfer to the UNW commando's vessel is swift. The teleportation pads normally do not allow ship to ship transfers but as your vessel is a friendly one and you are part of the team they are able to establish a location lock and bring you aboard without the shuttle being used. Everyone is strapping on kit and an expanded selection of goods is waiting for you here as well, along with everything you'd wanted to take from your own vessel. Uniforms have been stripped of insignia, names, anything denoting someone as being a member of a foreign nation. "There is a CBSS ship in the system as well. We've been speaking with them on the way in and they confirmed the existence of system pirates. Amana Lin spaceport has been flooded by The Stain, but their operative was able to get into the city using the spaceport elevators- they still have power, and the contagion was reported as vented out before they lost contact with him in the city. Polychrome is deep underground. You'll have contact with one another, but contact with us is going to be impossible unless you make it back to the surface. It's thought that some of the exhaust and maintenance tunnels might also lead to the surface if escape back through the spaceport elevators becomes impossible, we would expect those to be Stain flooded, so you will need to move swiftly and try your radios often if that is a route yo're forced to take"

Aya, having gotten ready prior to being transported over to the ops ship, listen to the final instructions. Once the captain finishes, Aya nods indicating that she got it all and signals that she is ready to go. (Aya is already wearing the armored vac suit and has her backpack and weapons ready)
Avatar
"Alright, onto the pads. Lets get you deployed. OPs is getting reports of fighting in the districts claimed by Icarus Industries. Stay away from that zone once you get below ground" The team steps onto the pad and after two minutes of humming , buzzing, and a growing electrical charge there is a flash of light and you find yourself on the ground. The shuttle and your own vessel are breaking position now that you're on the ground , returning to orbit to wait for mission updates. Yellow Stain clouds drift across the ground and the team wastes no time picking things up and making for the large elevator that leads below the surface of the planet. The CBSS operative has wired it to work again and you can see his repair work should hold for a while. He did his job well for coming here alone. A pleasant ding announces the arrival of the elevator, and its wide doors open, rubber atmosphere seals part to let you in.
Avatar
Aya steps into the elevator with the rest of the team and looks at the button options available on the panel.

(Hey, I have a little UNW flag, that's cool)

There is an up option, which is currently not lit as its at the top of its shaft , a door open, door close, and down button, which is lit.

"Down it is." Aya pushes the down button as soon as the team is in the elevator and ready (edited)
Avatar
After a several minute long ride , the elevator door dings, releasing you into a dark terminal that once would have warmly invited people to this amazing city. Most of the holo displays have bullet holes in them now. Several are splashed with blood. The overhead lights in most sections have also been shot apart. The corridor has visitors moving forward into a large circular atrium where dozens of phone booth like information terminals are spread out so information can be accessed before heading out onto the streets outside. Most of them seem to have been looted or smashed for the thrill of it, but two are working and seem to have some kind of network access still.

“Ok, let’s establish a perimeter and get our bearings. There seems to be two terminals that may give us a sense of direction. Let’s hack them and see if we can get a map and even better, some idea of where some tech may be held.” (Intent is to have the computer tech hack the system and see if we get find an objective to work towards rather than just blindly wandering the streets…and to that end, a map as well…although, I would kind of think if this had been an established city, we may already have a map, but just in case. Also, I don’t know the individual team member names…I by no means want / need you to give me those, it may be too much work that doesn’t matter much…I’ll just work around it by giving generic cues like “hack the computer” and expect the computer tech to do it. Hopefully that’ll work out just fine.)
Avatar
(Let’s get a program/int for the tech, 2d6+2, as far as a map I don’t have a entire city map because it would be about the size of New York City but depending on how the check goes I can give you some specific destinations and we would ignore survive checks to get there without getting lost, since you’ve got a map)

You’ve got a map now and directions to The Glass Tower where one of the mega corps that ruled once here made their headquarters. It includes a map of how to get there and an access code for the main doors of the building. There’s no indication on who might be there now with corporate having fled
Avatar
The Glass Tower: Former Headquarters of Lucid Industries, this pillar of gleaming multicolored glass juts upward within the central dome of the Warrens, dominating the lesser structures that cluster around it. Automated Gravstat drones still take off regularly from the tower to monitor the Warrens for structural faults and large-scale outbreaks of violence, though they now report to no one, filling databanks with information that one one will ever be around to process. Stained drone pilots regularly disguise their illegal gravstats as these ubiquitous, dog-sized flyers so no one will notice their covert drops or communications.

(Just to clarify, are we still at the computer terminal getting this information? Or did we get the info and also complete our movement to the building…now standing outside of it, ready to breach?)

“Ok, we have our target location. We’re heading to the former headquarters of Lucid Industries, also known as The Glass Tower. It’s the tallest and most noticeable building in the area. That’s means two things. First, we’ll always have a visual landmark if we get separated. Second, it’s bound to have occupants.” “Movement will be direct to limit our exposure. File formation, 10 meter spread, and keep to the side to limit our presence. Move quickly, but quietly.” “Stay focused, keep scanning, and don’t forget to watch building tops.” “Let’s go.” Aya moves the team out in the direction of The Glass Tower as indicated on the map. (Not sure it matters, but will have 3 riflemen and 1 heavy front and back. Myself, assistant TL, computer expert and marksman in the middle).

No one in the street decides to mess with a team of well equipped and determined combat troopers and those few civilians and gangers in the street quickly make themselves scarce. The walk takes about an hour as you wind through the uneven streets. Stain level so far is low, within tolerable limits but you hear exposure and breach alarms going off a few districts over- along with the roar of heavy machinery. Whatever is happening there, someone seems to be trying to get it under control. More attention away from you, it seems. The Glass Tower has seen some new occupants move in since corporate is no longer present here. A large Stained Freedom Front banner hangs across the upper floors, garish red with black letters painted in oil on it, and the symbol of a rising fist common to many freedom or resistance movements. Four guards at street level look to be former gangers now trying to be "professional". Their combat armor is ill fitting, and they hold their weapons inexpertly. Observing them from the cover and concealment of an alley, they have not seen you, and are highly distracted by the sirens going off a few districts over.

Aya turns to the assistant team lead and says, “Ok. Take up a defensive overwatch position here. I’m going to go talk to them and see if we can do this in an easier fashion. My plan is to get inside and try to negotiate for what we need. At the very least I may be able to get some intel on what’s inside. Afterwards, I’ll try to exfiltrate myself. I’ll try to keep comms up…if you hear the trigger word ‘drink’, I need help. Otherwise, if you don’t see or hear from me within an hour, use your best judgement to hopefully get me out. But, if everything goes haywire, then save the team, get out and report back.” Aya then pauses to see if the ATL has any questions or comments before she gets ready to exit the alleyway
Avatar
Everyone is ready and they are in covering positions. These freedom fighters will be dead before they know what has hit them should they decide to greet you with hostility. They're still talking a bit among themselves, unaware they're being watched or are about to be approached.
Avatar
Seeing as the ATL has nothing to add, Aya stands up, takes a deep breath, and lets it out. She tries to nonchalantly slip out of the alleyway before, as best as she can manage, confidently walking up to the guards. “Excuse me, I would like to meet with your leader. I would like to purchase some tech,” Aya says while thinking that this is the dumbest plan ever. Perhaps guns blazing would have been a better approach… Aya smiles.
Avatar
The freedom fighters snap out of their conversation and sloppily try to look professional, even if only for a moment. "Purchase some tech? Who are you with? The boss is going to want to know"
Avatar
“My name is Aya. I have been hired to come here to see if I could procure some of the pre-scream tech that may still be around here. The one question that I cannot answer is for whom do I work. They prefer to remain anonymous. I, myself, do not even know. It was rather cryptic. So, I am here to negotiate…if you would be so kind as to take me to your leader.”

“We can’t let you see Commander Ife if you’re coming in armed. You can leave your weapons here or we can enter the commander’s room with you while we hold them, but you surely understand the measures we need to take to guarantee her safety “
Avatar
“Sure, no problem at all. I don’t mind if someone carries them while we’re in the Commander’s office.” Aya then hands her weapons over to whomever is going to hold them for her as they go see the Commander.
Avatar
You’re handed off to another team of guards inside. All young. A mix of men and women. Each of them have a few patches of scaly jaundiced skin that they try to keep either mostly covered or at least slathered with a thick grease like salve. You’re taken to an elevator where you and the four man team enter, and the code for Ife’s office floor is punched in

Aya waits patiently for them to open the door.

Commander Ife is a woman who has grown up in a marginalized community, found work in the Elysium Protectorate, and was originally sent here on assignment but decided to stay when she discovered truly how bad things were on Polychrome. Seeing herself in many of the people left behind when corporate pulled out of the planet, she has resolved to do what she can for the locals. Every day Ife and her Stained Freedom Front launch sorties against the remains of the megacorps here, work to return social and infrastructure services, and handle any Stain breaches that worm their way into the city. Every day they struggle is another day their people stay alive.
9:46 AM
"Welcome to Polychrome. I can see already you're not part of the same detail that the CBSS sent here, I am commander Ife, who are you? and where are you from?"
Avatar
(You know…I’m sitting here thinking about a mistake on my part. I saw the team and assumed it was going to be a military action type thing. I didn’t ask…and nobody mentioned it…was there a funding source Aya could use to purchase the tech? … or were they only planning on getting it one way?) “Hello, Commander Ife. My name is Aya Storm. I come from Chloe in UNW space. I was asked to come here to acquire some lost tech, pre-scream tech, unique cyberware, plans for unrealized tech…etc. I was hoping to either barter with you for some or see if you could point me in the right direction.”

“Barter is one thing we can do but I’ve got an idea where we can both get something out of it and we can take an important toy away from someone I don’t like. Lucid industries used to be responsible for social service and running the slums here. We kill their left behind security troopers whenever we can find them and it’s something I’ve enjoyed very much. Thing is though they’ve made like the third Reich and now they’re hiding the uniforms and burying them in the backyard. I need a new way to find the cockroaches I haven’t swatted yet. You look like you know how to handle yourself. If you can get personnel records from the old Lucid HQ, and get them to me, I think that’s payment enough for something the UNW would be interested in
Avatar
Assuming she’s still connected to the team’s comms and not being jammed, Aya decides to repeat the deal to give them a heads up. “So, a proposed trade then. Break into Lucid Industries’ HQ and acquire their personnel records. And for that you have some tech I could take a look at and bring back with me.” Aya pretends to think for a minute, then smiles and says, “Deal. I think I can do that.” “You mentioned that they are burning their uniforms. Does that mean they have broken up, are vacating Lucid’s buildings and just trying to hide so they aren’t hunted? Or are they still organized and using the HQ as a defensible operations position?” “If the latter is true and they are still in full operation, can you give me what you have on Lucid and their HQ? The HQ’s location in the city, floor plans, tactics they use, what kind of weapons and armor they have, patrol routes or how far out they patrol their area…anything that would help me would be greatly appreciated.”
Avatar
“We believe most of them are trying to hide. They migjt not occupy the headquarters anymore. We don’t know. This isn’t a professional operation I’m running here. We are ordinary people “Ife says. “No one was going to risk being caught
Avatar
“No problem, that’s good information already. Do you know where the HQ is located?”
Avatar
“Lucid is located the next district over, their headquarters is built on top of the old Supermax prison and they’ve got a strong position there, assuming there is anyone still inside “
Avatar
“Sounds good. If you’re people can escort me out, I’ll get to work.”
Avatar
They lead you back outside and your weapons are given back without trouble. Everyone is eager to see if you can really give some pain to Lucid
Avatar
Aya moves back across the street and tries her best to just fade into the alleyway. Aya speaks low into the comms, “Everyone, regroup on me. Hopefully you heard most of that, but let’s make it clear what our next step and overall plan is.” Aya then waits for everyone to regroup before she continues. “Ok. We’re making a deal with this Commander Ife. Apparently, they see themselves as trying to protect the citizenry around here. To that end, they need help. They want us to retrieve a list personnel from the Lucid Industries’ HQ. They want to use that list to track down some left-over security personnel who are trying to blend in after committing atrocities…or so she says.” “For now, we’ll trust her. And for our help she’ll give us some of the tech we’re looking for.” “Lucid’s HQ is located in the next district over. It’s built on top of an old supermax prison. It’s unknown if it’s still being used or not…and how many personnel may still be there. Some, or most, may have already moved on and have started hiding in the populace.” “Plan is to move to the HQ area using the alleyways for cover. Keep comms up. Spread out a little so we don’t draw too much attention. Once in the area we’ll take up positions and recon it…coming up with some plan of attack.” “Before we move, does anyone have anything to add? ATL, I just joined your unit. If you have any recommendations, let me know. Otherwise, we’ll head out.” Aya waits for any responses.
Avatar
You seem to be leading them well so far , and the risks you’re taking are measured. The teams comms expert thinks the might be able to hijacker’s one of the comms drones flying around the city to get a good look at the place from above, but you’ll have to get closer to do so.
Avatar
“Ok, good input. We’ll add that to the plan.” “Alright, we’ll move close to the area as I describe. We’ll hack a drone to recon the area. We’ll find our positions and entry point. Do a last min recon…and then execute.” “Let’s move.” Aya then looks at one of the riflemen and says, “You’re on point.”
Avatar
Spreading out to move into Lucid's area of operations you encounter moderate people in the street but the sound of Stain alarms a few districts over and the otherwise anarchic nature of the streets has you encountering less than a normal busy day in the city would have you running into. A few blocks from the site you see a flight of comms and delivery drones flying overhead, the ones your electronics experts had seen in other parts of the city

Avatar
(incoming fire has the right of way) The comms operator hands you their goggles so you can see what the drone does. From the ground they'll get their own feed from the drone control link. "Okay boss, we're live. We'll be getting a floorplan here in a moment"

8:07 PM
(Also, what is in the surrounding area? You said slums. Are there any bldgs or areas that are deserted?...with a decent area around them (say 25-50m or so?))

(Thank you for allowing me to take some time until things are somewhat back on track. I’m better now. Still have a paper to finish, but one class ended…stress is down.) (Is Aya seeing any guards around the main gate? Also, is there only one main gate? Or is it like an airlock where there is two…and could she see that?...I’m asking because the map of the compound appears to have two gates. Lastly, are there any guards in those 4 covered areas on either side of the gates?...or just on the 4 corners of the coi? And no patrols? Sorry, I asked a lot of questions there).
Avatar
)it’s an airlock type gate as a secondary defense at keeping the stain out. We evaded street patrols on the way here so all we know about is the ones in the covered areas
Avatar
(Ok, so each of the covered areas. That means all 8, not just the 4 corners of the compound proper...but the extra 4 around the gate?...just making sure.)
Avatar
(You're correct)
Avatar
(I get the feeling I'm making this harder than it is... How high are the walls and are the gates vehicle sized or pax sized?)
Avatar
(Vehicle sized. The walls are 10m, the towers just a bit taller )
Avatar
“Ok team, I don’t have as much experience as you when it comes to these matters. It appears to be a smallish compound. Lots of towers with guards in each. One way in…the vehicle-sized gate in front which appears to be an airlock type gate. So, a double set of gates. I see 3 possible plans, one of which may not be possible,” Aya says as she begins briefing the team. “First, the probably not possible plan. We get a vehicle and try to fake our way through the gates. But, if we did that, we’d probably run into the patrols we avoided on the way here.” “Second, we breach the gates. This would expose us to the most risk. I’m not in favor of this one,” Aya says with a noticeably sour face. “Third, we maneuver around the back-side of the compound. We try to take out the guards in the two towers there. While I’d like to take them out at the same time, we only have one sniper. So, it would probably be one at a time. We can then try to breach or scale the wall. I’d like to scale it as the primary option. Once inside, we’ll try to finish off the other guard towers and assault the middle. I suppose we could set some explosives here at the front as a distraction, maybe even the boys, while the rest of us work the back.” “There is a stupid fourth plan where we try to talk our way inside and see how it plays out, but they’ll most likely take our weapons as we enter,” Aya concludes. “I’d like your input. Does anyone have a different idea? Or do you like one of mine? Preferably the third one. Oh, do we have any climbing gear?” Aya asks the team.
Avatar
The team has enough climbing gear for everyone in the event we ran into a situation like this or might need to escape a building by scaling down its heights. There are plenty of vehicles around and many have ghost drivers meaning they do not need to have an actual driver behind the wheel.
Avatar
Aya listens to the silence of the other team members as tacit approval of her preferred plan. “Plan 3 it is. We’ll set a couple of charges here. Separated by distance so that we can set off one at a time as needed. And not near anything that’ll cause civilian casualties.” “The boys will take cover in the front. The charges and the boys will be the distractions.” “We’ll have our Sniper maneuver around the back. Find a good position from which you can take out the two rear tower guards. “The rest of us will also maneuver around to the back and wait until the rear tower guards are down. Then we’ll assault and climb the wall.” “Once we’re inside and have the towers neutralized, we’ll try to secure the main gates and let the boys in.” “Any questions or last minutes? If not, let’s move.”
Avatar
(I think I’m set. The guards will react once things start happening but I’ve got nothing New to throw until things start happening )
Avatar
Since nobody seems to have anything to say, Astyria gives the order to move into positions. “Let’s move then,” Aya orders. (The intent is to move into positions stealthily…or nonchalantly…whichever the case my be…preferably without being seen. “The boys” up front with charges set in places that won’t harm civilians. The sniper around back at about guard tower height. And Aya with the rest of the squad at ground level around back…once everyone is in position, Aya will give the order to set off a charge and have the sniper take out one of the guards in the back just after. Then they’ll rinse and repeat with the other one in back.) (edited)

(I didnt answer because I have nothing to add. With how long its been I went back and re-read the mission and I get what we're doing, i just cant really progress anything until where we are now) The team is ready and you dont seem to attract any attention getting into position. People on the street is not something unseen in this underground city and you are designed to fit in with them. You don't pass too close to the facility either as you get to where you need to be, so the people on guard do not single you out for any kind of special attention. A raid by well equipped off world forces is something they don't seem to be considering.

Aya hears the confirmations that the charges are set, and everyone is in position. Aya is trusting in the team’s experience. In a low voice Aya says, “Positions are set. Charges are set. On my mark, blow the first charge and sniper take out the first guard. When kill confirmed, we blow the second charge and drop the second guard. When kill confirmed, the boys will make some noise, we’ll assault and climb the wall and take cover in the towers…at that point we’ll call weapons free.” “Everyone standby…” Aya takes a long slow deep breath, holds it a couple seconds, then lets it out slow and easy. Game time, focus. “Execute, execute, execute,” Aya orders and then waits for the first explosion and confirmation of elimination of the first guard.
Avatar
There is a three second delay between the explosion and the gunshot, and you see dust beginning to rise skywards along with smoke and fire. The body of the shot guard falls from the tower.
Avatar
“We observed one guard down, confirm please,” Aya speaks into the comms to the rest of the team, specifically hoping the sniper can confirm since they should have had the best vantage point. While Aya waits for a response, she observes the compound looking to get a read on the activity there. (EDIT: The edit was spelling out "please"...I originally put "pls") (edited)

A second body tumbles from the other tower as the base becomes aware this isn’t at all the course of a normal night
Avatar
Or we could go ahead without confirmation… Aya thought to herself. “Second one is down. Keep their attention on the front gate boys. Assault team, let’s go,” Aya orders as she and the other team members with her rush to the back wall to climb it and get into the hopefully cleared rear towers.

The grapple hooks are readied and the four pronged hook bites deep into the walls. Strong cables extend down now that the anchors bite deep and mag lock onto the wall. The chaos has kept people from getting close to this side of the wall but the calm will not last for long.

(Don't worry about it Neko, I love it. Adds texture and character to the story. I'll just play off of it.) (edited)

“Hooks are set, we’re moving up the wall. Continue with the distraction in the front. Sniper on overwatch. Don’t fire except to cover.” Aya motions to those around her, “Everyone else, up the wall. Move it. Get in those towers and get set.” Aya waits for the team to scale the wall, then goes up herself. Trying to get into one of the towers and into cover before they are notice.

The line is difficult to clmb and you're the last to get to the top of the tower, and you can see your inability to get up here quickly has cost the assault some of the momentum. Shots ring out from the surviving two towers as the prison becoems aware they are under attack.
Avatar
(Not exactly sure where Aya is at the moment. I assume at the top of the line…but not in a tower yet? Is that correct? I’m going off of that assumption) Add working-out to my list to things to-do, thought Aya. “Weapons free! Take shots as you get them,” Aya calls out as she dives for the closest tower and cover. (Once she’s in a tower, she’ll assess the situation. Watching any stairs / ladders coming up into them. Seeing if there’s a door they can shut / lock / bar / etc., to secure their back. Then will join in on the combat.)
Avatar
(First line of what I wrote says you made it Into one of the towers, so you’re in one already but you’d see a hatch in the floor where the guards would climb a ladder to get inside this top part. The floor is otherwise solid )
Avatar
(Gotcha. Any locking mechanism on the hatch?)
Avatar
(not from this side)
Avatar
(Indecision…and wondering what she would do realistically. I’ve taken a few liberties with past actions) Aya pulls out her laser pistol and opens the hatch slowly…trying not to expose too much of her head over the opening.
Avatar
You see a long ladder leading down into the floor below where guards would have something of a ready room before coming up. You don’t see anyone down there right now but alarms are going off inside and you can see weapons behind cages on wall racks working the chamber , so you can guess any reinforcements will be coming through the room below (edited)

Micaela Finnegan | Adrian | 3/27/2022 3:50 PM
A message from the UNW assault shuttle back at the Star Port is forwarded to Aya's comm gear "Attention UNW personnel this is Micaela Finnegan, Greystar Agent. I see your craft in the Starport and figured I should reach out and see if you were open to working together or offering information since we're in the same neighborhood. Reach out to us if you're so inclined. Otherwise best of luck down here and keep your valves tight and your suit sealed."
Avatar
Aya notes the message for later. Keeping an eye down the ladder for any movement, Aya asks the squad, “How are those other towers coming? Can you take them out quickly without getting bogged down?” Aya waits for a response.
Avatar
(If we are going to get into a firefight with them we will go into initiative. I held off because I wasn’t sure if you were going to go inside or not)
Avatar
(Well, before we proceed, since you and I confused each other, let me ask this… Have they noticed our group that climbed the wall and are in the tower(s)?)…are they shooting at me and my group specifically? Or are they only shooting at the boys and possibly the sniper? When you said that I was a bit slow and they have taken notice they’re under attack and “shots ring out”…I took that to mean that they noticed us in the back and are shooting at us. If that’s not the case, I’ll clarify what we’re doing.)
Avatar
(they have noticed the assault, and can see everyone, since there is now light, smoke , fire, they have panspectral optics. Incoming fire would be directed at the entire assault force aside from the sniper who is further back/more well concealed)
9:39 AM
(They are shooting at everyone, likely more at the towers themselves, but we are in a firefight)
Avatar
(That’s what I thought. So, I had told them to go “weapons free” and to “take shots as they get them”. So yes, I was telling them to open fire on the remaining towers…and anything else that popped its head up/out. Since we can’t lock the hatches, I’m kind of guarding our backs while they take out the other towers…hopefully quicky. I was asking them and trying to get a read on whether they could take the remaining towers out quickly or not. If not, we’re going internal and just let the sniper in the rear and the two boys out front keep them pinned while the rest of us go inside.)
Avatar
(It would not be easy to suppress them quickly, as they offer good cover and concealment - basically they're doing what they're designed to do ) (edited)
Avatar
EDIT: (Gotcha. Then down we go.) Rather than waiting for a response, Aya corrects herself, “Disregard my last. The boys and the sniper will keep the towers pinned and try to take them out. The rest of us are going internal.” “The ladder appears clear. Let’s go,” Aya holds the hatch open, aiming her pistol down the shaft, watching below for movement as the others assault down. (edited)

10:42 AM
The room below is a readyroom, filled with ammunition, rifles, body armor, and other items officers would need to reinforce the perimeter in the event of..well, this exact kind of attack. A closed hatch and the north and another at the east side of the room present the only ways into or out of this chamber.
Avatar
(Are the doors/hatches lockable from the inside?)
Avatar
(Yes)
Avatar
Aya hurries over to the northern door and locks it. “We’re going east first. Stack up and breach,” Aya says as she finishes locking the other door and gets ready behind them. (Intention is to lock that door, preventing the enemy from coming up behind us…and then move through the other door (eastern one) and start our clearing.)

You hear sounds of alarms and shouting voices but the inside of the facility does nothing to help pinpoint where actual foes are coming from. Locking the north door, you head east into a long hallway. There is a hatch at the end with a fire extinguisher next to it. A stairwell branches off the hallway at its middle point, leading down to what is labeled as the holding level.
Avatar
(I’m such an idiot. Should have gone the other way…sigh. At last mention, my squad has 11 members…not including me. 2 heavies, sniper, computer, 6 rifles and an ATL.) “Have two of our riflemen stay here and watch the stairs. The rest of us are continuing on to the next room,” Aya instructs the ATL. Aya then has the remaining squad members stack up on the next door and orders the breach.
Avatar
(So everyone’s pulling off the towers to also come in?)
Avatar
(Well, except for the two heavies out front, and the sniper in the back, I thought everyone else was inside with me. Did you have a different picture?)
Avatar
(You just said you earlier, so I did, but it's good that's why we ask) Alarms begin to sound as you slowly draw folks down from the roof and into the prison itself. Looking down the hallway there are the stairs leading down to the holding level, and a hatch that is not labeled. They stack up outside the hatch and there is a faint beep as a charge is used to blow it aside, allowing you to storm the cafeteria, where no one currently seems to be placed.

Downstairs there is a commotion, and suddenly a hissing sound begins reverberating from the walls . You've heard gas under pressure before, and the sniper left in the tower reports Greystar Agents tried to access the facility. He is unsure where they went after he told them off.
Avatar
(GSC got involved and this mission has been gonig on A LONG TIME . With their help, the prison has been overrun, and the prisoners we needed extracted rescued. Am awarding 3xp, and 5000 credits for what we did so far, and we've got enough social cred with the locals to get some info on cyberware)
Avatar
(No problem. Where do we pick up at?)
Avatar
(I think just outside the burning prison, with the prisoners either dead or escaped, unless you entirely want to be done with this place to move on to something else. UNW has a ton of other issues)
Avatar
(There will be some irony in my response here...but I kind of like to finish what I start. lol. But since this situation has resolved itself during my life explosion (sounds a bit rude that does), we can do an abbreviated clean-up of this story and press on to something more...pressing.)
Avatar
You remember getting into a compartment fight before hearing someone in the team yelling something about gas and fire from the floor below, and something else about Greystar operatives. There was a heavy impact on your head and back and your memory cuts off until now, being outside the prison. You can tell by how your equipment harness is hanging off you that someone or two some ones dragged you clear by your shoulder straps. Your gear is covered in ash and burns, and you feel like some of your former patients who were smokers must have, like breathing through a straw thanks to the smoke inhalation. The prison is burning close by and from what the scouting report says, whatever prisoners weren't burned in their cells, are now in the custody of the Greystar agents who crashed your assault and must have done something downstairs to trigger the heightened security response.

Aya looks around to see if the rest of her team is around and safe. At the same time, she goes out over the comms, “Hey, everybody report in. Is everyone good? Does anyone need help?” (Intent is to have Aya make sure that the team is there and in one piece. If anyone seems like they need medical attention, she’ll administer aid.)
Avatar
Two members of the team are wounded, but nothing that will kill them if they wait for aid. The injuries are light across the team, and for now the main concern is getting clear of the burning prison to regroup and determine what comes next.
Avatar
“Everyone up and move to the alleyway, we’ll assess the situation, treat wounds, and make a decision where we go from here,” Aya says into the comms. (Intent is to get everyone moved to a relatively safe location away, treat wounds, and discuss what we got or did not get.)
Avatar
You find some sanctuary in a bombed out building nearby, with enough left over to provide stable floors and some concealment from the surrounding streets. The wounds suffered by the group could be treated here on site, and the mission assessment is grim. Greystar has made off with the prisoners that were supposed to be saved. Most of those prisoners were killed within the fire and gas flooding of the facility as Lucid enacted their final sanction to terminate those inside. The SFF will likely understand the failure of the mission , but without collateral they won't offer the cyberware technology they promised to bargain for.
Avatar
(Based on what you wrote, my understanding is that we got nothing. We were knocked out due to the gas, but dragged out...so saved. You mentioned that the entire complex is in flames...so, there no chance at going back in to grab something, correct? I'm assuming no, just want to clarify the situation.)
Avatar
(Your assumptions are all correct. Aya was knocked out, and the team members who were not as hurt /still conscious dragged you and the other wounded team members out. )
Avatar
After treating the wounds, Aya addresses the team, “Alright, this mission was a failure. However, at least we all alive. Thanks for dragging me out. You are all professionals and a credit to the UNW. Let’s head back to our contact here and report in. And we’ll do it the same as last time. We’ll hold up in an alleyway and I’ll go in alone and report.” With that, Aya stands up and moves out with the squad. (We’re heading back to report to our contact. Just like when we originally talked to her, I’ll have the team wait outside in a covered position while I go in and talk to her…keeping the comms open just in case.)
Avatar
You once again find yourself at the Glass Tower, meeting with rebel leadership. The mission is explained and true to form, things do not sour, they understand other interlopers intervened and caused the mission to fail , and will deal with them where possible if they are still on planet. Families of the lost will be informed. Bringing the perpetrators to justice, preferably through capturing them is something the SFF would look kindly on, as would combat operations against other Lucid Industries holdover targets they have identified within the city.

I’m also trying to get things transferred over to the new excel spreadsheet format.) “I appreciate you all being so understanding. It was unfortunate that the location was double booked. Regardless, I’ll take responsibility. We were moving cautiously so as to prevent the scenario that happened. But perhaps I was being a bit too careful and therefore taking too long.” “That said, I do have an inkling as to who the responsible parties are. Unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll be able to hunt them down and provide any resolution on the subject. We did, however, promise you some help in exchange for something we need. We are still capable of providing that help if you have another target for us. I don’t like leaving things undone.” “Would you like our help with something else?” Aya asks.

“Do you have any intelligence on them? How large is the facility, how many troops, and what kind of equipment do they have? That could dictate whether we dig in and prepare or make a preemptive attack,” Aya asks.

The same communications frequency issued to the group last time is cleared for use again, and remains an official channel to be used if you need to contact the SFF again. The location they provide you with is fifteen blocks away to the east, about an hour and a half's walk, but after a few moments of deliberating an open bodied cargo truck is approved for your use. From the edge of the block, there are SFF barricades where there are occasional skirmishes. Beyond there, you are beyond the wire, and will be beginning your scouting expedition.
Avatar
Hmmm, if there could be skirmishes along the way, I would almost prefer to walk. Besides, the truck could draw attention. And there could be VBIEDs also. But, it would allow us to travel a bit more quickly and save some energy for a possible assault. Guess we’ll use it, Aya thought to herself. “Sounds good. We’ll use the truck to take us most of the way and then walk in. We’ll do a recon, send you the info, and then my team and I will decide if we’ll hit it then and there, or pull back and help you defend.” “If you don’t mind, I’ll go address my team and we’ll set off,” Aya says as she turns to depart the building. Once out of the room, she tells her team to meet her out front where they’ll go over the plan and then load up and move out. Once outside and with her team, Aya addresses them. “This is going to be a GAF. We’re going to use a truck to take us part of the way. But we’ll disembark prior to the barricades that separate the green and red zones. We’ll walk the rest of the way to the target which is located here,” Aya points to a map. “The primary objective is recon of the facility. Once done, we’ll make a decision whether to hit it while we’re there or pull back and defend here. Any questions or comments?” Aya asks. (If the team has nothing to add, Aya will direct them to load up and move out…stopping near / before the barricade.)

Approaching the line of division between the two territories you can see this is almost a favela like neighborhood where houses and shops have barnacled on top of one another. You can hear the sound of skirmishing in the neighborhoods around you, though it sounds like, an exchanging of shots without anyone making a serious push into the others land. Heavy engines from a few blocks over break the scattered chaos, though these engines are also shut down after a moment. The buildings here are non-standard heights, ranging from simple trash shacks to actual homes made of proper building materials, 2 to 3 stories tall that tower over the neighborhood.
Avatar
(What is the pathing situation like? I’m assuming since the buildings are all put together all higgeldy piggeldy that the alleyways and the such would be maze like and have lots of dead ends. So, the main road is probably the best, or only, good travel route?)
Avatar
(I can get you a map if that is easier, but it is a maze with lots of dead ends)
Avatar
(Naw, don't need a map...i don't think. Just wanted to confirm that the indirect route would be complicated. Would probably get into more trouble going that way then direct. I'll get my next narrative in there after work here.)
Avatar
(the route is complicated yes, there is a direct road leading into the next district where the enemy is, but that road is hemmed in between buildings and whatnot)
Avatar
(Last question, while I, myself, don't need a map...you are making it sound as though we do actually have access to one. Can we pick our way through the maze?)
Avatar
(With a roll or two depending on how we tackle it, we can certainly try to worm our way through)
Avatar
(I applaud the way you put me into beautiful indecision with this one. Direct route will be fraught with checkpoints and ambushes. The indirect is a quicksand quagmire with a maze, gangs, thieves, and also meeting with an ambush by the enemy faction. lol. Ok, I have to go into work...will post when I get back. We've been having sandstorm after sandstorm here. So, I've been shutting down due to dust in the room.)
Avatar
Once Aya and the team disembarks at the VDO point, Aya pauses to consider their next move. Hmmm. We could either take the direct route, where there are sure to be guarded checkpoints, ambushes and lookouts who could warn the base. Or we could go the indirect route which is convoluted, could possibly have gangs or thieves blocking our path, or even the enemy. This is going to be a choice between the lesser of two evils, Aya thought to herself. Aya turns to address the squad, “We’re taking the indirect route. It’ll be a bit of a maze in there, we may have a chance of meeting up with gangs, criminals, and possibly the enemy themselves. But if we take the direct route, we’ll be assured of running into a fight and alerting the base. Our best chance at not alerting our target is the indirect route.” “So, safeties off. Keep your head on a swivel. Watch roof tops.” “We’ll travel in a 2-person bounding overwatch.” “Move out,” Aya commands. (Aya and the team will take the indirect route. Hopefully it’ll minimize alerting the base.)

Avatar
Entering the winding mass of city streets you are quickly somewhat lost in the confusing maze of buildings that does not seem to match the maps provided of the local area. Barnacles of buildings seem to keep expanding and growing off one another like organic collections of material, and as you round a corner into the most straight of the alley you've been able to find so far, you see what looks to be a small group of four gunmen quickly ducking into cover behind some trash on the opposite side. They are local and poorly trained and equipped compared to you, but somehow seem to think they have a chance.
Avatar
“Cover! Four gunmen front. Hold fire,” Aya says into the comms. After taking cover, Aya calls out to the gunmen, “We’re not here for you. You are out-manned and out-gunned. What would it take to let us pass?” Aya then quietly says into the comms, “If they open fire, take them out.” (Intent is to see if we can get past these gunmen without a gun fight. Aya wants to see what they may want in exchange for safe passage.)
Avatar
'A toll!" one of them calls back "50 credits, and we let you pass. Or we just kill you and take it. Our boys are all over this neighborhood"
Avatar
“I have a counteroffer,” Aya says. “I’ll give each of the four of you 50 credits for safe passage. In addition, I’d like to hire the 4 of you for an additional 50 credits each. Three of you will stay here and watch our backs. I’d like the other one to lead us to our final destination since you know these streets. Perhaps helping us avoid other run-ins,” Aya adds. “I’ll give you those credits now. However, once we’re done with our mission and back outside of this zone, safe, I’ll double it. Deal?” Aya asks. Hopefully that amount of money will buy loyalty and a guide until our mission is complete, Aya thought to herself.
Avatar
“Alright. You and one other. No guns. I’ll send two of mine out too and do the same. Let’s make a deal” the voice says , calling back out to you amid the barking dogs and noise from inside the family homes around you
Avatar
“Ok,” Aya responds back. Over the comms, Aya tells the squad, “Give me one of the riflemen to come with me. Leave your weapon.” Aya then turns to the nearest squad mate and hands them her pistol. Once ready, Aya and the one rifleman head out to meet the two gang members. (I’m assuming there’s something like PayPal or Venmo where we can just transfer funds…if this goes smoothly? Probably should have asked for clarification prior to doing this.)
Avatar
(There is. )
7:19 AM
They come out as well and look to be going along with your proposal. You don’t see any evidence of being tricked.
Avatar
Once Aya reaches the meeting point, she asks, “So, do we have an agreement?”
Avatar
"Transfer the credits, and we will have a deal. Iron clad one at that"
Avatar
Aya transfers the 400 credits. One hundred for each of the 4 of them. “Done. Once you verify, can we each pull our people out of cover, have them put their weapons down, and talk business?” Aya asks.
Avatar
He nods and upon getting the pleasant chime that the trade was successful he makes a few snappy gestures with his hands and his companions emerge , weapons held low and safe, not intended for use now that there is a deal in place
Avatar
“Bring it in,” Aya tells the squad, “we’ve made an agreement.” As the squad comes out of their cover, Aya gets her gun back from one of the squaddies. Aya then turns to the gang members, “We need a guide. We’re trying to get to this point here.” Aya points to the location where they’re going. “Can you get us there unnoticed, as well as setting up a rear guard to make sure no one comes up behind us?” She asks.
Avatar
"No wonder you pay so well. I think its only fair to my family you tell us what ytou're getting into out there"
Avatar
“I would think that you would rather not know. The more you know, the more you and your family are at risk. We just need you to get us close to the location. We can go the last bit alone as long as you can give us directions. Then, you can get out of the area and to someplace safe. We can give you a message when we’re on our way back. However, if you really want to know, I can tell you,” Aya responds.
Avatar
He thinks for a moment. You've given him an out, and if they're not seen, that story should hold.
12:56 PM
"Nevermind, you're right, it's only going to be an issue for us if someone sees. We'll get you through the neighborhood, but we still need some idea of where you're going"
Avatar
(Question / Clarification: Aya already pointed out on a map where they need to go. I would assume that he could get them to that area. Also, I'm guessing that most people may know of an armed base that's nearby. Aya isn't trying to be secret about it, just giving him plausible deniability. But I assume it's prob not a well kept secret and even by pointing at the map they might guess what our actual destination is.... Does he need her to point to the location again?)
Avatar
(Yes. That’s what he’s asking. You don’t know why )
Avatar
(Fair enough...standby)
5:08 PM
Aya takes a deep breath and then lets it out slowly. Showing some signs of being annoyed. “Again, we need to get to this area here,” Aya says as she breaks out the map again and points to the same location as last time. “Just get us as close as you can, as safely as you can, and when you feel as though you need to drop back, give us directions for the remaining distance. We have no intention of getting you or your family into trouble,” she adds. “Can you do it?” Aya asks again.
Avatar
He sighs , now really looking, really understanding what you're intending. "if the pay was any less I'd have said no, we'll get you there, and keep your heads down on the way. There's going to be drones. Probably a patrol or two too. They shoot anyone they see, even if you live around here"
Avatar
“We’re doing this to ultimately help the people here. Or, at least, that’s what I’ve been told,” Aya states. “Just do what you can. And if you know of an abandoned building that overlooks the area we’re interested in, I’ll throw in a bonus,” Aya adds. “Of course, and I’m assuming you have an idea of where we’re headed, if you know of any weak spots, that’s worth something to us too,” Aya concludes. “When you’re ready, though, we’re good to go.”

Two broad winged drones pass overhead as you get close to the indicated point on the map. You can see tall light poles have been set up to look down onto a small encampment of prefabricated shelters, a parking lot with sixteen light vehicles in it, and what looks to be a larger hardened structure that is either a storage building or some kind of command center. You can see flashlights in the parking lot, and it looks like two soldiers are on patrol there. You know from your contacts other units patrol the nearby streets and buildings, and there are passes by drone surveillance.
Avatar
(I need help with a mental picture / understanding of our situation. I have a few questions. First, where are we in relation to the small encampment…meaning, are we in a safe / hole up spot? Second, does it seem as though we have much time to assess / plan for our attack? I’m getting the picture that we don’t and may be discovered at any moment since there are drones and patrols around…they also seem to patrol the buildings. So, we really won’t get a chance to find cover, sniper positions (since they’d be discovered in the buildings by patrols), etc. This seems like a more immediate decision to attack or pull back. I don’t need specifics about things, I’m just trying to get a general sense for what the situation / urgency is like and if we have time / options or not…if that makes sense.)

(I'll have to write up something more detailed. I'll get to it as soon as I'm able)
Avatar
(Thanks Neko. Take your time. I have no problem with play and find out, but I'm not sure if i have the right impression of the situation or not.)
Avatar
(We have time to plan the attack, but we can't linger. I'd say we'd be able to watch for about ten minutes before needing to move in or leave, unless we're doing something to obviously draw attention to ourselves to cut into that time. )

(I can conceivably scan the parts of the base I can see while at the same time talking to the team, correct? It's like two actions, but I don't want to assume what I can do in real life will translate to game mechanics. Trying to save what precious little time I have.)

(yes you can do that)

(Neko, I've been busy with mission after mission. I'll get something in shortly.)

(Ok, back. Redeploying back home soon, but in a better place to do stuff now.) (Aya is going to take a look around at the base and see what’s there. She knows about the 2 guards amongst the 16 vehicles. She wants to see if there are any more guards and / or explosive options…like fuel depot type stuff. At the same time, she’s going to ask the assistant squad leader for her opinion. That’s the intention anyways.) Aya takes another look at the base to see how it’s setup and if it’s a rather open design or closed. She also wants to see if there’s anything they could use as distractions or to help take out the buildings and / or vehicles. While she’s looking around, Aya asks the ASL, “What’s your opinion on this? I don’t have much in the way experience when it comes to these matters. Just a short while ago I was a doctor at a hospital. 16 vehicles could mean they have a rather sizable force. Too big to take on with just our 8. Plus, with all of the patrols in the area, we won’t have time to setup in positions. We seem too exposed here.” “I think it may be best to either retreat back to our friends and help them make a stand there, or try to setup an ambush in a location around here where we can funnel them to our advantage,” Aya adds. “What do you think is best? Attack, ambush, or just pull back?,” Aya finishes.

You notice a total of eight guards and two flying spy eye drones keeping an eye on the local area. Their patrol routes seem to be four guards and a drone walking clockwise around the exterior of the compound. Another four with their drone sit in an armored looking blockhouse in the center of the lot.

(Any words from the ASL?)

"Some of those might be replacements, or parts cars. Hard to tell for sure. We're here to destroy them anyway, and we have the advantage of not being spotted so far. The confusion will see us safer , but we're going to get spotted before long. Whatever we do, we need to do now"

(Again, not sure how the squad works without me having the feat…so I hope being general helps) “Ok, let’s do it,” Aya tells the squad. “Set charges on the bikes if you have them. Take out as many vehicles as you can. However, priority will be anyone or thing that can shoot back,” Aya adds. “But first, let’s see if we can take the two out in the parking lot first. If we’re noticed, let’s have the boys and sniper keep the tower suppressed. The rest of us will try to defend against the outer perimeter patrol.” (So, you said at first that there were two flashlights in the parking lot…with a guard attached to each. Then you narrated on my “rolled for notice” that there were two squads…one group of four in the tower in the center, and another group of 4 patrolling. Not sure if that’s 8 or 10. If the 2 in the parking lot don’t exist, then we’ll take positions in the parking lot, try to rig the vehicles with whatever the squad is carrying…or try to disable. If the spot us from the tower, we’ll engage while taking cover behind the vehicles. If the two in the parking lot exist, we’ll try to sneak up on them and take them out…then go for the vehicles, etc. If that makes any sense).
Avatar
(I wasn't really following this honestly. Everything I described exists. I described a general scene when we first arrived, the notice check gave us some additional details as we nested down in the ruins for a bit and kept observing)
Avatar
(Ok, we'll try to take the 2 in the parking lot out first...preferably silently. And then follow through with the other stuff as outlined...trying to quietly plant explosives / disable the vehicles until we're noticed, at which point we'll try to focus on the tower in the middle until the squad at the edge of the perimeter comes to engage.)

(we have met the conditions for an execution attack)
Avatar
(Back home from training. As we discussed, I need to take a break. Am super busy. But would like to remain as an observer until I have time to play again. Will finish up this mission and then you can put my thread on ice for a while.)
Avatar
(sounds good, execution attacks are skill checks, so it would be a shoot/dex vs a DC of 8. Normally for execution attacks you need to occupy your position for a full minute while you draw a bead on your target, and they must remain unaware of you the entire time, so we have the conditions here)

The shot is clean. The merc falls onto their face with red pouring from a chest wound. A seocnd shot from one of your other men silences the second of the pair, leaving the middle of the vehicle lot unguarded. The twin shots likely will have been heard, but not from where.
Avatar
(Do we have the resources to crawl around and start placing explosives on key vehicles to try to damage and/or destroy most of them? I'm not sure what the team is carrying explosive wise besides possible grenades.)
Avatar
(Yes we do. We have a few demo charges as well and that’s a big 40m radius)
Avatar
Once the 2 guards in the parking lot are down, Aya instructs the team to set set the charges in the optimal places to take as many of the vehicles out as possible. (Intent is to crawl around and place charges in the most...or as close to the most...optimal areas to cause as much damage to the vehicles as possible...on some kind of remote trigger.)
Avatar
(Yeah we could do that. Let’s get a sneak/dex as we avoid the other patrols and plant )

You are able to dodge the patrols here, escaping notice of both the couple of security drones and roving squads and it looks as though everything is in readiness. The demolition charges will be quite enough to handle the stockpiled hardware here.
Avatar
(Are there any charges left, and can we make it to the tower unseen? Would setting some charges take it down?)
Avatar
(we have one left, and its a 40m heavy weapon blast so we could take it down)
Avatar
(Let's do it. Try to plant one at the base of the tower as well...then we'll back out to the best cover or choke point we can see ... someplace where we can defend and control the avenues of approach...if there's any such area.)
Avatar
(probably the way we came in)
Avatar
(Fair enough...we'll do that then. Needed an exit strategy anyways.)
Avatar
(Sounds good.). You return to your initial position where you’d entered the region first and overlook the compound and security arrangements made here. All looks to be quiet and the bodies have not yet been discovered
Avatar
(Once at the initial position, we'll set off the explosives for the tower to take it down. We'll wait for any response...hopefully they'll congregate in the vehicle area. If that happens, we'll trigger the remaining explosives to destroy the vehicles and hopefully any troops in that area. If we encounter any patrols and/or receive fire at our position, we'll blow the remaining explosives right away and take out the vehicles...and deal with the patrol afterwards. Does that make sense?)
Avatar
(does to me, go ahead and hit it!)
Avatar
Aya presses the trigger for the tower explosives.
Avatar
There is a massive blast as the tower detonates. You see two of the supporting beams have been blackened and begin to bend at the intense heat and pressure. There is some residual smoke and fire as the vehicles parked nearby begin to catch.
Avatar
Aya waits to see what the response will be before she sets off the other set of charges.
Avatar
The survivors begin running toward the site of the blast, looking to try to rescue anyone they can, as the fires are already beginning to burn out of control.
Avatar
(Is the parking lot where are the vehicles are inbetween us and them? I'm thinking about trying to draw them into the parking area and setting off the remainder of the explosives.)
Avatar
(Yeah it is. They’d have to cross it to get to where you’re hunkered down right now)
Avatar
(Well, not wanting to die, but going into "break time" here in a blaze of glory.... let's open fire if they're in range.) Astyria tells the sniper to take aim and try to take out the one that looks most like the leader. She also tells the rest of the squad to open fire as they get in range and try and draw them into the parking lot. Astyria then waits to see what happens...finger on the trigger for the explosives. (So, having everyone open fire after the sniper takes their shot...hopefully doing an execution...or at least doing a lot of damage to the one who looks most like a leader type. Everyone else will open up as they come into range. Astyria will hit the explosives trigger when most, if not all, of those peeps enter the kill zone.)

The entire patrol is dropped, and the facility is burning now. This setback is one the enemy will not recover from this.
